12 TALK THAT WAS RATHER TORRID D.M. Deimas Tells of Things That Pleased Him Not. "Jackals" and "Dogs" Anions the Names Called His Opponents. Charles S. Wheeler Will Eeply To- Day and Deimas Pur Is Ex pected to Ply. The case of Mrs. Craven is before the jury. At 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon D. M. Deimas concluded his argument, which had been six hours induration, and Virginia Fair's attorney, Charles S. Wneeler, will talk to the jury to-day. Tbe courtroom was sadly overtaxed yes terday. To the large number eager to hear what was expected to be a forensic masterpiece was added a considerable number of sensation- seekers. These crowded the corridors and waited eagerly for Deimas to emerge when he had con cluded his address. When the attorney came he was surrounded by his asso ciates, with Detective Reynolds close at his heels. The party hurried to where a carriage was in waiting and were driven rapidly away. There was no ".Baroness'' in sight. Mr. Deimas, at the morning session, con tinued his comments upon the appa rent belief of the children in the genuine ness of the pencil will, as evidenced in their petition for its probate and in nu merous interviews had by Lloyd and Wheeler with Mrs. Craven. He also dwelt upon the point raised by McEnerney in his opening address, thai Mrs. Craven had concealed tie possession of the deeds from her then attorney, Reuben H. Lloyd. "She knew the trust will had been stolen," he said, "from the County Clerk's office. She knew her pencil will had been stolen. She feared for her deeds, hence in a business which did not concern them she put them on the wrong track. And if Mrs. (.raven did withhold her confidence from them. I ask you in the light of later de velopments, did they deserve tnat confi dence?" Then the speaker turned his attention to John R. Aiiken, whom Judge Curtis of New York grilled so effectually. Deimas hunted tnrough history for the most despicable traitor discovered, and having located him in the person of Leonard Mc- Nally, the Irish informer, he said: "Had John R. Aitken been born 100 years sooner, and bad he been indicted upon Ireland, the discriminating eye of the Enelisb Government would have ■ -lectcd him as McNally's superior in treacher.." He paid his respects to the other side generally, specially excepting McEnerney and Mitchell, in terms unquestionable. "In spite of the clamors, the insinua tion and the efforts to ruin reputations by vile and malicious slanders, I say to those of the other side, whether they be law yers, detectives, jackals or dogs, they might just as well know now they can assassinate me, but they cannot intimidate me." Mr. Deimas then said a few pointed things about jobs. Such, he int. mated, was the production of the Crocker blanks; such he absolutely characterized the en tries in Snider's book, whereby it was un dertaken to prove Fair's presence at Kan JUiaei. Tne testimony of John R. Ait ken and Bartlett's retraction he placed in the same category. He argued that it was no evidence of the insufficiency of Mrs. Craven's claim that she was willing to compromise ior $500,000. With an opDosing reserve force of $15,000,000 and thirteen lawyers it was but an evidence of her prudence, ne con tended, that she preierred to receive half her just dues to engaging in a lons litiga tion lor the whole, but the offer on tne part of the children was evidence that they believed her claim justified. "If ttiey bad paid as they promised," fte said, "and as for one whole year they led her to believe they would do, this action would never had been brought." In reference to the evidence concerning the blanks used by Notary Coonev, the Podce Department came in for a broad side. The speaker told the story of Joseph ant the silver cud, which he caused to be placed in his brother's meal-sack; and Mr. Deimas said significantly mat it is as old as Genesis, finding the proof of a crime exactly where the imputer had put it. He maintained that if trie defendant was unable to explain the similarities ami dis crepancies in the blanks and proofs it was because access to Crocker's establishment had been denied her attorneys, while every employe of the place was under or ders of Captain Lees and the plaintiff's conns*)!. The conclusion consisted of another roast for Charles S. Wheeler and au elo quent appeal to the jury. Mr. Wheeler responds this morning at 10:30. He has been treated to numerous and keen lashings fiom Mr. Deimas' toncue. and it is expected that he will make a warm return in the course of nis argument. mum FOR ARREST. Baroness yon Tuikheim Again Appears Before Judge Conlan, Baroness yon Turkheim is determined to make a martyr of herself by being thrown into the City Prison. Yesterday morning she again appeared in Judge Conlan's court with her attorney and asked if the warrants issued in March last for her arrest on charges of malicious mischief had been found. The Judge replied that to his knowledge the warrants had not been found, but he promised to do everything in his power to discover them and nave them served upon her in regular form. The Baroness expressed her thanks and promised to return to-day in the nope that the warrants would be served upon her. Detective Harry Reynolds acted in the capacity of Atiorne\- Deimas' bodyguard yesterday, but the office proved a sinecure. CHINESE FRAUDS. Commissioner Saunders Accused of Receiving Bribes From Mongolian Broken. Dr. Gardiner, official interpreter for the Chinese bureau in this City, has been summoned to Port Townsend to testily in the matter of fraudulent Chinese entries at that place, and to tell what he has as certained as to the alleged bribery of Commissioner Saunders. The Call "pub lished a full account ol the matter about a week apo. It is alleged ihat Commis sioner Saunders has been taking bribes from tbe Chinese brokers, ano charges have been filed against D.m at Washing ton. Pending the investigation he has been suspended. Saunders was a clerk in the White House under the Cleveland administration, and not into trouble more than once, but through the intercession of Cleveland the matter was hushed up. ir >rT B. CONDEMNS THE OLD HOSPITAL The Grand Jury Adopts the Eeport of Its Health Committee. Condition of the Buildings Is Designated as Almost Criminal. Work of the Present Superintendent Commended— A New Hospital Advised. The health committee of the Grand Jury, after bavins made a thorough in vestigation of existing conditions at the City and County Hospital, has rendered a report condemning that institution as unfit for the purposes for which it is used and as a menace to the public welfare. The committee found that the buildings were erected twenty-five years ago. since which time the population has increased to double what it was then, without any great improvements being made to ac commodate an increased number of pa tients. In turn each of the departments, as far as the provisions for the care of the sink are concerned, are taken up and con demned. The laundry, provisions for the care of those suffering from contagious diseases, surgical instruments, electrical apparatus, heating appliances, accommo dations tor the reception of children, storerooms, fire-escapes all come in for a share of the roasting. The blame lor the condition of the hos pital is laid at the door of previous Boards of Supervisors for having neglected to make sufficient appropriations for the re pair and maintenance of the buildings, one portion of the report reading as fol lows: Insufficient appropriations for the main tenance ol the hospital have prevented the proper repair from time to time of the badly damaged buildings, and for the same reason the equipment of the hospital lias n.'ver been strengthened, but, on the contrary, has been allowed to deteriorate into a condition nothing short of disgraceful, if not criminal. We have found the blankets used oy patients to be com j pletely worn out, badly lorn, and not sufficient : for the purposes of warmth. The window | shades are dilapidated from years of use. The ; bathtubs, originally of inferior make and qual ! ity, are a discredit to a public charity. The I enamel has been worn ami the rough iron be ! neath laid bare. They are kept clean with i difficulty and are entirely ansuiied for further } use. The plumbing in the closets, 1 ltnoucti , greatly improved within the past six months, | has never been properly completed, and open i soil pipes are to be found in several of the j wards and also in the executive building. The report concludes as follows: Your committee is pleased to note the effi cient work done by the present , Hoard of Health under the supervision of 'Dr. J. M. Williamson and his corps of able assistant-; but notwithstanding their desire to make the place what it should be, it is a hopeless un dertaking to patch buildings which have out lived their useiulness and stand as relics of pioneer days. As compared with private insti tutions of modern construction, it is as night compared to day ; and in the name of suffer ing humanity we would demand that an a - propriation be made sufficient to erect proper buildings wh.-re our more unfortunate fellow being-< may find a suitable place of refuge in thei. hour of need and distress, aud would recommend that these buildings oe erected on the Almshouse Tract as the most available and suitable site for the hospital.
