Everybody Satisfied With
the Pledges of the
Supervisors.
Missionites and Other Taxpay
ers Glad That the Zoo
Scheme Is Killed.
Half a Million Dollars Saved to the
City by the Energetic Work
Against the Plot.
While the advocates of the expenditure
of $400,000 of the people's money for a
tract of land for a park and zoological gar
den are working up fictitious indignation
meetings, on paper, and bogus petitions,
also on paper, those who believe in having
the substantial improvements first. ore
perfectly satisfied with the expression of
opinion of the various Supervisors.
The Mayor has said that he thought the
present time inopportune, the old Board
of Supervisors went on record as being op
posed to the scheme to unload a lot of
worthless property on the city at an ex
orbitant price, and now the new board
has also expressed itself, or a majority of
it has, as being against a'i increased taxa
tion for the purpose of establishing a
monKey-ranch in Squirrel Hollow. That
this expression on the part of the men
who make the tax levy is acceptable to
the taxpayers can be seen from the inter
views bad with men who are well known
and stand h igh in the community.
William Ede — The residents of the
Mission district were never in. favor of
the park and zoo scheme, and of course
we are all well pleased with the fact that
a majority of the members of the Board of
Supervisors will vote against it. I was
sure they would stand between the job
bers and the oeop'e wben they learned
the true situation. There are too many
places for our money just now to spend it
on parks, and the Supervisors are as well
aware of this fact as anybody else.
John Morton— l am well pleased
with tne mailer a* it now stands. I must
confess that for a lime it looked as if we
were to be indeed with a heavy tax levy
in order that certain land-boomers could
dispose of their property, but I always re
lied upon the sterling good sense of the
Supeiv.sors and was sure that when they
Knew how the matter stood they would
not be parties to the scheme. The Call
deserves the thanks of aii the taxpayers
for its noble fight.
Jiudsre D. J. Toohey— could
be out one outcome to ibis matter if the
Supervisors ioo_ the desires of the tax
payers into consideration, and they have
evidently done this. Vie are all well
pleased with the situation, and are es
pecially pleased wiih the fight The Call
has made for the people.
Daniel W. Kelly— l am glad tbat
we have boar 1 from the Supervisors in
this mntte*. It is an easy matter to get
up a petition with many names upon it,
but when it comes to having the tax-pay
ers sign a petition asking for increased
taxation that is another matter. The peo
ple of the Mission were not wanting a
park and zoo, and we are glati that we are
not going to get one.

IT WAS TOO COLD.
The Ex-Supervisors Disappointed
the Boomers in Squirrol Hollow.
The Supervisorial excursion to the
"Squirrel Hollow" park site which was
to take place yesterday alternoon from
the City Hall was a miscarriage. This
was no fault, however, of the management
committee of the "Mission Parle and
Zoological Association.*' That distin
guished body was there by its representa
tives, George D. Shaiburne, T. V. O'Brien
and Dr. Curtis G. Kenyon. The balance
oi the committee (ten) did not show up.
Four carriages with eight black horses
suitable for funeral purposes were there
with drivers adorned with stovepipe head
gear. The Hon. Thomas W. Rivers, ex-
Supervisor of the Twelfth Ward was, there
with his heavy overcoat thrown carelessly
over bis arm. lie was waiting lor his ex
as«ociates of the board that was.
Messrs. Shadburne, O'Brien and Dr.
Kenyon held a close corporation whisper
witn the honorable ex-Supeivisor. from
the Twelfth Ward, after which the quar
tet separated and made a careful but in
effectual search through the corridors of
the City Hall building for the other seven
ex-honorable gentlemen who bad prom
ised to take a drive to the proposed site at
the expense of the "Mission Park and
Zoological Garden Association." Failing
to find any of thete they were in search of
President Shadburne, and his assistant, T.
V. O'Brien, returned, and in the saddest of
tones informed the hackmen that their
services would not be required this after
noon.
Out in the Squirrel Hollow everything
had been put in the best possible shape for
the inspection of tbe distinguished body
that was expected, but that did not ma
terialize. The fences had all been white
washed and the gopher and squirrel holes
had been filled up with sand and. made to
10->k as natural as was possible. A distin
guished delegation of "boomeis" had
taken their place-- on the lee side of the
gum Lees, to shelter themselves from the
cold fog that had unwelcomeiy come in
through the ravine from tbe ocean.
Tins unwelcome visitor was just the re
verse of what the "boomers" wauled, as
it presented the home of the squirrels in
anything hut a favorable coloring. It was
cola and windy out there, and su it was
about tbe City Hall in th? sections where
the ex-Supervisors stood in shady corners
waiting the sad news that came later from
tbe Parrott building, when the Supreme
Court declined to review the findings of
Judge Wallace. T . ■

ness circles has occurred in the insurance
department of the firm of W*. Loaiz-i & Co.
This company has long oeea cstaDlisiicl in
the general commission ami exporting busi
ness, and recently took up tire insurance on a
largo scale under the direction of C. J. Stove!
ana J. Thebaud. The agreement by which
these gentlemen have conducted this depart
ment has recently been dbsolved and Edward
Ci'iime, late of the German-American Insur
ance Company, takes full control. Mr. The
baud will remain in the general business of
the firm.
