10 WOOED BUT TO SWINDLE John Woods Brought Mrs. Jen nie Wright to the City and Bobbed Her. He and His Brother Charles Ar rested on a Charge of Grand Larceny. Mrs. Jennie Wright, a blooming widow Df Redding. Shasta County, and the owner of mining and real estate property there, has been the victim .of two confidence men, one of whom trifle.i with her affec tions. In April last John Woods made the ac quaintance of the widow in Bedding by offering to purcb-SJ a horse and buggy from her. He represented himself as a commercial traveler for a clothing-house and said he wanted the rig to drive around the country. The widow refused to sell the rig and after a few hours' conversation with her he departed, promising to pay her a visit on his return trip. About ten days npo Woods again called upon the widow and at once proceeded to ingratiate himself in Tier pood graces. He was succes-ful and was invited to cull igain. He did so several times and wound up by offering the widow His heart and hand. The widow blusiiingly ac cepted the offer. The tie.-;' day Wools loid the widow that he wi>s a little snort if money and she cave bim $50 to buy a «uit of clothes for their marriage, Then he suggested that she should deed her property in Kedding, consisting ot an in ter* in a mine and some building lots, to him, but she thought that would not be right and instead transferred them to her daughter. W'>ods objected to being married in Redding, and the widow agreed to come to this city. They arrived Tuesday morn ing, and registered at the Kuss House. The widow spent the day in making ar rangements for the wedding, which was to take place at 7 o'clock. "When the hour for the wedding ar rived." said the widow yesterday. '•Charles Woods, who represented himself as a brother of my intended husband, rushed into my room and asked me to excuse Woods for a few moments, as he had to go down the street to attend to some min ing affairs. I couldn't refuse him, so he went out and was gone an hour or more. When he returned he said it was too late lor the wedding, as it was impossible to secure a license, and 1 believed him. ■'After 1 retired for the Dif-lit Woods came to mv room and demanded that I give him what money I bad in my posses sion. 1 began 10 suspect him, andrelu-ed to accede to his demand. He got terribly excited, and. lcc_i:ij; the door of the room, forced me to give up my purse, containing $3CO in greenbacks, which he cut out of my dress pocket. He kept me locked in the room all night, threatening to kill me with a knite if I made an out cry. He admitted then that he was a swindler, and tbat he had formed my acquaintance only to swindle me. He said he had been a swindler for twenty years, and his brother helped him.*' Mrs. Wrieht yesterday morning sug ge--ied to Woods that as lie had got all ii<t money and she had playe.i the dupe he and his bother should go with her to t_e Cliff House and Lave :: good time before she went back to Redding. Woods, believing her, allowed her to leave th* room. She immediately notniei! Colonel Young, proprietor of the hotel. Ha went to the room and there found Woods and his bro.her, Charles, who had called meantime. He keDt them there until Policemen Walsh and Farrell arrived, and ooth men were taken to police head quarters, w ere they were questioned by Detective Gibb*, and Woods admitted that he had agreed to marry the widow simply to obtain possession ot her money. When searched $2.56 in bills was found on Woods. The widow swore to a complaint in J. idee Low's court charging both men with -.rand larceny, and they were booked at the Cirv Prison, eir bonds beitiz lixed at $3000 each. Charles Woods is known to the police under the name of Raymond. B*V Air.*-. Wright will remain in the city to -prosecute the case. Read Next SUNDAY'S CALL ; Bccaus: It Will Be Full of ; Matter Worth.
