12 WORK OE JAIL. I No Imprisonment "for Debt, Sayi the j Supr«-nie Court. The Supreme Court has handed down a decision in which it overruled a peculiar j judgment o: he lower court. Tne wife j of J. 11. Todd obtained a divorce from him, and was al owed permanent alimony -in weekly settlements. After paying her $280 he ceased to make lurtlier payments ana was taken before the court to show cause why he should not be punished for contempt. • In that hearing it was established tnat Todd had no means nor money to make payment. The lower court allowed him a month in which to seek employment so as to p«y his obligations. This oppor tunity was permitted to pass by loud, j who made no effort whatever to K et j work ami the court ordered tna: he he imprisoned in the County Jail until he; paid the $200 due. In pa^ins upon the habeas corpus pro ceeding tl''t followed this order the supreme Court said -Thin order Was clearly in excess of the power of ihe court, which" cannot compel a man to seek em- j plovnient in order to ray alimony and j punisn him for h s failure to do so. The j prisoner is discharged. 1 IHG STOCK MARKET. An alvance in Justice to 57c was the only change worthy of DOle 1 1 mining stocks yesterday Trude w a 'v 1 as usual.
