10 TEMPEST TOSSED FIRST CHOICES Five Straight Favorites Bowled Over at Oak land. Judge Denny Led From Start to Finish in the Handicap, Horatio, at Lengthy Odds, Downed a Crack Lot of Sprinters— Doyle Nearly a Surprise. If eatinc a turkey dinner on Thanks giving day at Dawson City proves a more expensive pastime than landing on a win ner was at Oakland track yesterday, then the inhabitants of the snow-locked little city of the northern gold fields are in need of the sympathy of the civilized world. The han-iicappers and the wise men of the turf went amiss, and if Bliss Rucker, a favorite, had not captured the fast race of the day, there is no telling how many spectators would have been com pelled to take advantage of the bank ruptcy act. The attendance was large, and the book makers enjoyed _ feast such as lias not ; fallen to their lot for days. The talent | tumbled over each other in the hustle to ! pet their money on and the layers of odds j kept it ali. 'Ihis too, in the lace of ail I conditions favorable to racing; _ beauti- ; ful day and a lightning fast track. The principal cause for this grand dis play was the defeats of the well-played j favorites: Heidelberg, Zuaata. tit. Cala- j line, Wheel of Fortune and Joe Terry. j Possibly ail were beaten on their merits. | The first favorite to give backers a j shock was Heidelberg. He was heralded | asa good thing for the opening mile and a sixteenth run, and if his showing is j any line on bis capabilities he should be | relegated to the milk wagon service. ' Widow Jones with J. Woods and S9 -, pounds in the saddle, the only starter to i have the odds ruobed, took the nurse in a j drive from Outaway. Billy McCloskey, a | 100 to 1 choice, finished in the show. The j winner was played down from 8 to 5 to 1. Foul choice specimens of the thorough- I bred started in tbe seven-furlong run for j two-year-olds, with Zapata closing a 6 to 5 favorite. In a nunishing drive through ! the stretch Donaior, the 3 to 2 second i choice, ridden by I. Morse, led the favorite past the judges nearly a langtii in 1:29. | }>> Happy downed Espirando for third | place. More trouble followed. A six-furlong i scramble tor ail ages was the cause of the • disturbance. Bellicose, with 112 up, at first opened favorite at odds oi Bto 5, but j the public seemed to have soured on J. j Nagiee Burkes sprinter and he receded to ! threes. Tho chestnut lilly Ist. Calatine. j carrying 91 pounds, undoubtedly carried the most money, final closing an Bto 5 favorite. F.eur de Lis was also extensively supported, going over to the post second in demand. Horatio bad quite a number of friends ; wno took the 12 to 1 chalked against him. i As figured by the backers of the latter horse Beliicoso, fleetest of not, skipped away in front with all but Piggott on Horatio breaking their necks to catch him. When well into the stretch Figgott brought Horatio up on the inside, and wiih all the others looking for hammocks won cleverly by a ienirih from Beliico o, in the last time of 1:13%. Peixetto, away poorly, was a close third. The mile and a furlong handicap, with a field or" six lining up, was another per plexing problem. Every horse in the race was b icked. Wheel of Fortune, in at 111. was made a false favorite with odds of 11 to 5 about her at post time. In*ta'lator, witn his IIS up, went back from 6 to 8 and 10 to 1. O-it.i r Joe bad a good following and a select few strung their checks on the chances of the other black horse, Judt;e Denny. This latter horse turned up the winner. Leading from the jump, riggott never relinquished the leail, finishing at the end a length in advance of imp. "THE CALL'S" RACING CHART. W Inner, turni & Walerhoust'a Dr. c., by Salvstor-Iris. Time, 1:16. Trance, against which 12 to 1 was. laid. In*tul ator ran a remarkably good race (ending up in the show), when it is con sidered the winner equaled the coast record for the distance, 1:53. Ostler Joe trailed in second position to the stretch, when he began to falter. "The Wheel" never looked dangerous, evidently having lo«t her keen edge. Doyle, a 75 to 1 shot, played down to 30, came within an ace of landing the fifth event, over a mile and a sixteenth, de cided under selling conditions. Maicing the pace from the outset the outsider, rid den by H. Brown, was only collared and beaten out the last sixteenth by Mamie S<o:t, a 6 to 1 shot, with Jones up. Joe Terry, the 8 to 5 choice, finished back in the ruck. Bliss Rucker faced the barrier a6to 5 choice in the final sin-'uiloug jaunt, and won as he pleased froiit Free Lady. TRACK ITEMS. Frank Brown, trainer of Doyle, was tempo rarily suspended by the judges after that horse's improved showing in the mile and a sixteenth telling affair pending a further in vestigation. Mclnty re's ride astride Personne on Tuesday, when he needed out Lady Hurst and Mar quise, was one of that young man's annual efforts, and another like it may not be expected before Christmas, 189 S. Joe Piggott is riding in the best lorm of any jockey at the truck. His handling of Horatio was a very artistic piece of saddle work. Hughey Jones was very wraihy over the de cision of Judge Murphy in refusing to further accept the entry of Mainstay, and has turned the horse over to the charge of Trainer Jimmy j McCormick, who will keep a careful watch on those "peculiar sweats." and report the vary ing changes to the official*-. Friends of the pencler intimate that a decision rendered from the stand at St. Louis, where Judge Murphy presided last summer, and ovjr whicn the bookmaker registered a "kick," has .*."me thing to do with prejudicing the official again -I the big Mariner horse. The decision in lej.ctlng the horse's entry seems the mosi absurd ever rendered in this section of the country. Mainstay is an exceedingly last I horse, and ii lie was '-pulled" in any <f his re cent races, and same can be proven, horse, jockey and owner should have been ruled off. If the horse is an erratic one of the in-tnd-ou: order there are many others of the same sort, and his entry should be taken. The Horsemen* Protective Association from recent developments is beginning to assume tangible lorm, at least from all indications. The ttack magnates frown when the name is mentioned and there maybe a small revolu tion in turf affairs "ere the snow flies " One of the "kicks" registered against the Oakland association is in regard to the money paid for scratching enti ios, which at the track over the bay all reverts to the association. At Ingle side it is divided between the horses finishing second and third at a ratio of 60 and 40 per cent respectively. 11 matters cannot be ami cably adjusted in regard to raising the amount of purses to te raced for, a third track is even hinted at by some ot the more enthu siastic owners.
