Anything of Merit Can Depend on Receiving a Profitable Patronage. Music Director Stewart Tells of How Eastern Critics View the Situation. :'. ■'■■■ ■■. ■ . V ... - Oaklaxd Office San Francisco Call,) 908 Bio id way, Nov. 1?. )' Alexander Stewart, ibe music.i. director, ot this cii j-, who has recently spent con siderable time in Chicago, adds an in* teresting chapter tothe con trover 8? which periodic illy arises over the merits of Fa cific Co. st cities as viewed by dramatic and musical artists. Y\ hile in Chicago Mr. Stewart made it his bu-iness to find out truthfully how celebrated artists retarded this coast. In his reseatcb.es he was materially aided by George Armstrong, ihe well-known critic o. the Chicago Tribune. 'It is all nonsense for people like Hay man or any other manager to decry the i Pacific Coast," said Mr. Stewart tc-day. ' It is a fact that after London and New York nearly all artists are anxiou-* to be spoken well of by San Francisco critics and audiences. "All the world know singers who come here are we.l treated and make money, ' and they ar- nut slow to acknowledge that j fact. There are many companies and j third and fourth rate people who come i our, here on a bolstered reputation, which ! they cannot maim in, and he Pacific ! C ast quickly sits down on them. I can recall numberless instances in which peo i pie who are really great in their respect lines were well treated on this coast. The most recent are prruaps Xord en, Treb lii, : Padcrewski, aud others of their caliber, ; and I am sure they have do lau'.t to find with the cjast. The same is equally true lof dramatic talent. When a really good thing comes out here it can depend on making' money, both in O island an 1 San Francisco. While in Chic go 1 earned a great deal about the esumiics placed on this coast, nud .was surprised to find that it is credited with being a very critical locality. '•It may be popular once in a while for some one in the East for advertising pur pose", or to hurt a rival, to talk about the lack oi appreciation oi real genius on this coas , out -uch instances are rare and never disinterested. 'One great trouble with a good many companies is this: they put out a fir-t --cless production in the East, which is favorably c iticized, and the manacers spread ail over Hit- coast these criticisms. After leaving the East is a rule they enly bring tut about one-third of their star performers, apd the public having been led by their notices to cxi eel a truly first class show, are Justly indignant when they discover the imposition. Whenever the West is honestly treated the treatment is always reciprocated, and this fact is gen erally recognize ." HONORED HIM IN DEATH. A Suggestion That the Two Men May in Reality Be One. An Incident That Leaves a Doubt as to Whether It Was a Joke. Oakland Office Fax Fkancifco Call.) 908 Broadway, Nov. 18. ) There must be two Henry C. McFikes, hut they do not have the same name. There are two men that answer so thor- H. C McPIKE AND HIS DOUBLE. oueh'y, even in detail, to the description, appearance, and even to the peculiarity of accent, that are the legitimate property of the real Mr. McPike, and tins duality leads to many cations. According to Mr, McFike, or the gentle man who says be is not Mr. Mi Pike, th.p complication has placed him in an incon venient position at least a thousand times. I-Qssl Attorney McPike is a well-known Demo crat. A year ago he was a very promi nent delegate at the celebrated fusion county convention in Alameda Couniy. He ha* an intonation ot voice peculiarly his own ; no one having heard it a dozen times cou d possibly forget it. Mr. McPike en joys a good joke, and this propensity of his may possibly explain an incident -hat occurred last night near Mr. McPike's home in this city. For several hours a gentleman was seeking Mr. McPike, who l- the represen tative for Mrs. L-ngiry's interests in this State. At the corner of Eleventh and Alice, whic i is about two blocks from Mr. McPike's home, a man, the perfect ima_e of Mr. McPike, was talking on the corner when spoken to by the. man who was s«*eking m. "Mr. McPiki-, • 1 be lieve?" A loud laugh succeeded these words. "McPike, ha? Now isn't that funny? I hay* been taken for MrP.ke 1000 times. Who is McPike? I should like to meet him so that this thing em be settled. 1 am told 1 have his voice and his looks and his mannerisms and his gait, and in fact eveybody that wants to meet Mr. McPike refuses to believe that I am not the man they seek.'' _HH| Thus spoke the McPike, who is not Mc-P "What is your name, si'?" "On, that ruts no liguie; I am not Mr. McPike and I guess you no not want me." After another laugh the gentleman who was not McPike walked toward the Mc- Pike home, and the man who wanted to talk to him is still wondering whether Mr. MrPike perpetrated one of his j ikes or whether there are really two men so much alike that on one thousand occasions one should be mistaken fir the other.
