Who the Players Are That Represent the Universities, Among Them Many Giants of Long Experience on the • Gridiron. To-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock Stanford University and the University of California will line up on the gridiron field at Recreation Park for their seventh annual intercollegiate football match- Both teams have finally recovered from their recent injuries and indispositions and are in physical condition and spirits to play the game of their lives. Stanford is happy and confident and eager for the battle. California's hopes | have revived wonderfully during the last j few days of systematic, machine- like, per fected plays. California's team will arrive here from Monterey at 4 o'clock this afternoon. j The Stanford players will be here to-mor row noon. Over 7000 reserved seats and several I thousand general admissions have already 1 been sold. Perhaps 1000 reserved seats J were left when the local sales temporarily closed last night at Claborough & Goi cher's. Great sales have also been made j at Berkeley and Palo Alto. The grounds will be opened at noon : to-morrow. There will be put on exhibition this morning in the Market-street window of ; IHE CALL business office a mammoth' photograph by Thors of the Stanford Varsity eleven, the largest single print ever made in the West. EL MONTE, Cal., Nov. 23— It was raining at El Monte this morning, a sharp drizzling rain, which caused the omission . of the customary morning walk. But at j 10 o'clock the men were out in their suits. ! The practice ye sterday bad shown a lack of pood wind, which could be remedied ' only by hard work. The rain and mud j gave an opportunity to practice handling i a wet ball, and such a chance was not to ] be neglected. The morning work from 10 to 1- and the afternoon work from 3 to 5 consisted mainly in sharp signal practice. The men showed more life and dash than yesterday. Everybody was in every j play, with a noticeable improvement in precision. The ends were run down often '• on punts. The coach was well pleased and cut the practice short after a series of ; dashes. The rain necessitated the utmost pre caution against catching cold. The iiien j were continually k.<m>', on the move while out. Afiereach practice they took their I bain and rub down and the suits were j thoroughly dried in the laundry. To-day's was the last practice, although a little worK may be done to-morrow morning. To-morrow at 11:45 a. m., the" squid leaves El Monte, arriving at San Fran ' ci-co at 4P. M. The men will be taken im mediately to the Baldwin Hotel, which will bo i heir headquarters before Ihe game. They will probably pass Wednesday even ing at the theater to drive their cares away. The team will nut up a hard fight. The players realize the efforts made by their university to enable them to be victors, ana intend to do their part fully as well. On the whole, their physical condition is supero. Mayer, Pringle and Ludlow have almost recovered from tlie.r little ills. Haskell has been extremely muscle- Dound of late, and his work had to be eased off. A day's full rest will restore him to form. According to all indications here and the opinions of the team (he coming Thanksgiving will not see a '20 to 0 game. James Hopper (Varsity Left End). CONGRESS SPRINGS, Nov. 28.— Brooke, as chief coach, and Harrelson, '93,' ! and Downing, '95, as his assistants, have been adding the last few touches to the i ! finis hing process of the cardinal football | I squad. They will send eleven men on the I j fieia Thanksgiving with but one thought — to win or to die. j;n»<Ke is sanguine. "While Downing ! and HarrelsoM have doubts, Brooke says j that if the Varsity men will play the j game they have against the second team in their practices up here that they will win. I asked what he thought the spirit of ; the team wa«, and he suid that he be- i 1 lieved that the Stanford men under his j i charge were as game a lot of player* as he ever met, and that all can be relied upon to do or die. Every member of the squad is in fine spirits. Rice and Fisher are the life the party, and by their jokes and witty I sayincs do much to keep their thoughts off ! the came. To-night all the Varsity men receivedfa i present from "Chip" Ray ex-'9G, one of the most popular and the wittiest men in I Stanford during his career, and who at present is a, prosperous business man in Knit Lake. The present received by each member was a silver-mounted rabbit's 1 ; foot with the receiver's name engraved ! : anon it. The following history and instruction accompanied each box: "Shot by a left ; handed, cross-eyed, red-headed negro in a I country graveyard, over a murderer's : grave at midnight. Rub then over the right eye to-day four times and three time- over the same eye on Thursday be fore going to the same " ■ Manager Switzer made a speech at the 1 dinner table and presented the feet 1 to-night. Three rousing cheers were I given for "Chip" Ray. and the men I swear that the instructions will be | j obeve'i to the letter. Manager Swiiz»r also handed to tho captain of the second team a beautiful loving cup, the present of our guest of the early part of our stay, Miss Beatrice Rus sell oi San Francisco, who was with Mr?. Cotton. The cup was filled with training-table ale and each member of the squad drank to Miss Russell's health, after whiuu three tmes three cueers were given for her. The practice today was of a light order. All the cripples are rounding into fine shaDe. Murphy's case of poison oak is HISTORY IN BRIEF OF FORMER MATCHES Stanford.
