The Calaveras big tree committee of the California Club presented a request that the association appoint a committee to act" in conjunction with similar commit tees from other organizations Hn the mat ter of urging the passage of the bill pend ing before Congress for the preservation of the Calaveras groves. The request was granted by unanimous consent. It wa»-*decided to- appoint a committee to examine Islals Creek for the purpose of recommending' what action should be taken by the association in the question of making the* waterway navigable. . The plan of the Board of Supervisors to build" a /street through Chinatown and thence to Van Ness avenue was Indorsed wfth the ( request that plans and esti mates of' the cost of tho improvement be secured as soon as possible. New firms elected to membership were the Pacific Lumber Company, West Coast Safety Faucet Company, Argonaut ¦ Tea and Spice- Company, Lud Zobel Company, Swiss-American Bank, Berlitz School of Languages, Grant Drug Company, George Herrmann Company, Vaugh & x Keith and R. B. Cranston & Sons.. . ¦ At a meeting of the board of directors of the Merchants' Association held yes terday resolutions favoring the establish ment of a permanent national tariff com mission ' were unanimously adopted and ordered transmitted to the President, tho Secretary of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. . It was argued that repeated agitations for changes in the tariff are injurious to the country; that when necessity for change! should arise an-unbiased, non-political body of men should make effective amendments and that a commission could handle the matter to greater general ad vantage than the legislators themselves. Recommendations were made to the Board of Supervisors that the ordinance requiring house owners to . observe the change- in .street numberlngs be rigidly enforced. The school teachers kept a careful watch. over their charges and no overt" act was committed. The following day another body of chil dren visited the place, but their conduct was -Irreproachable. But on "Wednesday the mischief makers swarmed down on the Citrus Fair and before they were driven off did enough damage to almost disrupt the . exhibition.
