HOTEL ARRIVALS More than 5,000,000 tons are thus daily delivered by the whole of London by houses, or about 7.000,000 tons by houses and factories together. A million tons of water are daily employed to carry away sewage; seven times this weight of air must be employed to carry away smoke. The cost of dealing with sewage is, in London, about $3000 a day. Five hundred huge electric fans would do correspond ing work for the air, at a cost of« about $21,000 daily, arid this would mean an In come tax of ten pence in the pound. A bad fog in London means the expenditure of $25,000 a day for additional gas. The loss to business may be from $100,000 to $250 000 in a day, and the annual cost of London 'fogs from $15,000,000 to $25,000,000. It appears that it may be a practical ad vantage to Impose, even the high tax re ferred to. Dr. Shay/ delivered a lecture on the treatment of smoke in cities before the Sanitary Congress in Manchester from which a few paragraphs are taken. The lecture is printed in full in Nature, No. 1722. The gravity of the smoke nuisance in England is bey.ond question, though we in America can scarcely realize it at present. Our turn is to come, the geolo gists say, and that soon, when the anthra cite coal beds of this country are ex hnusted. Every London chimney uses and defiles about 10,000 cubic feet of air per hour, and delivers four and one-tenth tons of smoky air per day. The average V.ouse will thus deliver about eight and one-half tons. Would Carry It Away as by an Aerial Sewer With Powerful - Fans. TREATMENT PROPOSED FOR SMOKE NUISANCE TUESDAY. JANUARY 27. The most difficult monarch to "move" is undoubtedly the Czar, and the transfer of his fittings from the winter palace to Livadia is always a matter or enormous preparation, and In consequence is not often undertaken. All the furniture in every room, with very few exceptions, is moved bodily, even down to the carpets, and the greater part of his library, con sisting of 80,000 volumes, makes the jour ney also. The comfort of the royal chil dren, too, is very carefully studied, the toys and entire: contents of the nursery being moved en masse to the new resi dence. If only for a stay covering a few weeks.— Tit-Bits. King Edward is 'very methodical, and not Infrequently superintends the packing in per3on. Whenever he goes into resi dence elsewhere he insists on taking sev eral small chests of drawers, tables, desks, etc., containing his private papers, besides favorite Inkstands, pen trays and other knlckknacks which he likes to see about him. In addition, several thousand pounds' worth of plate and china have to be taken for dinner parties, all of which must be most carefully packed, especially as among the crockery plates valued at £50 apiece are numbered, and it says much for the abilities of the packers that a breakage is very seldom recorded. Each case is checked three times during the journey— on being placed in the \ van, when transferred to the train and on ar rival at 'Its destination. A servant who acts as a detective is sent by the train as an ordinary passenger. The King admits a fad for collecting walking sticks, and h}s collection numbers more than a thousand specimens, at least a score of which he will want to take with him. It is not often that he uses the same stick on two consecutive days, and he makes a. point of personally selecting the sticks ho wishes to be packed. Yet no great amount of preparation is necessary for the royal flitting; indeed, the packing Is rarely begun till two days beforehand. Some sovereigns. are very particular as to their moving and cannot bear strange surroundings. The Kaiser is one of these, and when he goes into residence else where every article in his study at Pots dam—even to the pictures and knick knacks with which his eye is familiar goes with him, and is so expedltlously packed and unpacked that his room is never long in. a state of chaos. Other monarchs have similar whims, as, for in stance, the King of the Belgians, who cannot sleep in a strange bed, and the Kmper&r of Austria, who insists on din- Ing at the same, table wherever he may be, but as he strongly objects to using a tablecloth, this is, perhaps, excusable. In the castle workshop the packing cases have been made by a staff of car penters; and under the supervision of an inspector, who is directly responsible to the Master of the Household for their safety, the. articles are packed by the royal servants, and not by outside work men. In the inventory every article has a number, so each case as it is packed is sealed and ticketed with the numbers of the items it contains before being placed in the vans. In this way it is im possible for any one to detect which cases contain valuables. Kingrs, like their humbler subjects, fre quently have occasion to -change their place of abode, even though It may only be to one of the other royal palaces al ready furnished with every - comfort a monarch can desire. Nevertheless there Kre a' hundred and one articles required for daily use which the Kins take3 with him wherever he goes, and consequently moving -is always a function of consider able importance in the eyes of the offi cials at Windsor. It is not generally known that an in ventory consisting of sixty volumes con tains a full description of every article at Windsor, from the solid gold dinner ser vice, valued at £800,000, down to the smallest hearthrug. ' It was compiled at Queen Victoria's behest some years ago and is always called into requisition on these occasions. Their Selection, Packing and Carrying Matters of Moving .
