Oriental Dealers Decide They Will Oppose Orders Sending Them to Hunters Point. Celestial Landowners Hold That They Cannot Be Deprived of Their Rights. Fifty Chinese, owners of property In old Chinatown have decided to rebuild on the sites where their buildings were destroyed. Le&al advisers of the Chi nese, the Chinese Consul General and -Uic Vice Consul, King Ow Yang, give it as their opinion that the owners or lessees of land in Chinatown cannot be deprived of the ri^ht to rebuild if they so desired. Ii has been de cided to resist any attempt of the authorities to compel the Chinese to establish themselves at Hunters Point against the wishes of those who owned property in the old territory. A report of a burglary and two re ports of grand larceny were made at police headquarters Sunday morn- Ing. Cook, baker, 2126 Bush street, reported that three horses and three covered bakery wagons had been stolen from him on Saturday. The Chief m •his connection wants it known that rigs have been found on the streets by people and taken to stables until tjaimed by the owners. ! Mre.- O. J. McKeuzie, 1247 Ellis street, reported that two well-dressed women called at her house on Friday and said '\u25a0 t!i.ey were looking for apartments. ! After they left Mrs. McKenzie missed •«, hand satchel containing valuable jewelry and some money. The Rev. Father Laherty called at police . headquarters and reported that- an attempt had been made .early yestreday morning to break \u25a0open a safe belonging to St. Ignatius ; Church. There are three safes on Hayes street, close to the ruins of the church, and at about 4 o'clock in the looming the special watchman guard ing .the ruins saw a light at one of the safes and the outline of a man's figure. He fired three shots at the n'.in and the light was quickly extin guished. Before the watchman reached the safe the looter had disap peared. As there are many valuable relics and other property in ttie safes the reverend fathers decided to place a man specially to watch them and Father Laherty asked the Chief for -the necessary permit, which was at cnee handed to him. The Chief also promised him that the policeman on that beat would be instructed to pay particular attention to the safes. APPOINTS A COMMITTEE TO MEET WITH MERCHANTS Oakland Chamber of Commerce Pre- pares to Urge East Shore's Advantages. OAKLAND, April 30.— The Chamber of Commerce of this city appointed a special committee yesterday to co-op erate with San Francisco business men who may seek temporary or perma nent quarters in this city. The direct ors' action in establishing a headquar ters for San Francisco merchants at Pythian Castle. Twelfth and Franklin streets, was endorsed. • Edson Adams, president of the Cham ber of Commerce, was authorized to appoint a committee which shall work at once to limit the confines of China town.- It has been reported to the or ganization that the arrivals of Chinese from San Francisco have caused a de mand for houses in the Chinese quar ter, which is tending to enlarge the territory beyond the old lines. INDIAN APPROPRIATION BILL IS PAS6ED BY THE SENATE Effort to Amend the Message Fails After Hours of Spirited Debate. WASHINGTON*. April 30.— The' Sen ate yesterday passed the Indian ap propriation bill. Several hours were devoted to spirited debate on the ques tion of removing the restrictions from the .allotted lands of the Choctaws, Cherokees. Chickasaws Creeks and '&e ailnolos except full-bloods. Spooner was the particular champion of the Indian proving the right of the restriction, but Teller, Lodge and others who favored the amendment charged that he was mis guided Ir. his zeal and the Indians themselves wanted to be permitted to seek a market for their surplus lands Mr. -Bailey argued that the right of ••the restriction was in the interest of the- white settler and the future of Oklahoma and Indian Territory de pended upon rietting farmers on these lands before the price became too high for the settlers to buy.
