Gossip of the Doings of Railroad Men. > Peter -Harvey, Pacific Coast agent, of the Baltimore and Ohio, : who. has' re cently returned from; a trip throughout the Eastern States, says that" he k never saw/such a boom as there is at present on the Atlantic Coast. : "Everyone is doing a good. business," he. says, "and the railroads are jnaking big money. The /fact; Is" that there ia not a road in the "\u25a0; East -which \is not short on equipment.' There 'is not a line that is not, howling for i cars and the 'howl is directed agaltr«t /the? lines In the West, -which have calmly appro priated our cars and will not'send: them back. : "You ask who Is the sinner? "Why, it is the same old sinner. I mean the Southern Pacific. After my return from the East I , went to Nevada. And what do you suppose. I saw?- Well, sir, I saw a. train of twelve cars loaded with lumber, and each caV on that train was a Baltimore; and Ohio car. Here we have been asking for- the. return: of our cars and the lines in' the West will not give them up. They have simply taken advantage of the situatioff/out here and pay no attention to our pro tests. Of course there is a penalty, but the penalty is so small that they would rather pay it than give up the cars. . "We are not the only sufferers. , The New York Central lines and .the Penn sylvania have their cars' alL- over /'the western slope and cannot g»t them back. "I was In both Tonopah and Goldfleld and unhesitatingly say that they are th« greatest camps I have ever seen: Schwab Is expected tn Tonopah soon and it is reported that he. intends to do big things when, out here." John W. Brock of Philadelphia^ pres ident of the Tonopah and Goldfleld Railroad, Is at present In Tonopah.- Ha has been adding to h|3 . millions by making some wonderful copper, discov eries in his Greenwater properties. These mines are said to" be the richest In the world. Greenwater is near ; the Panamint rang* of mountains in Inyo County and near the famous Death Valley. The mines are between the Telescope and Kingston ranges. Brock went there in company with R.~ H. Rushton, vice president of the Tonopah Railroad, and spent fully, a month at the mines. Last week he was met there by J. F. Hadden, the general superin tendent of the road, in an automobile^ The distance from the Greenwater mines to Tonopah is over 200 miles and they had to carry their water with them for a good part of the journey. ; Brock 'is busy extending his road from Goldfleld to Bullfrog and Clark Is as busy extending his from BullfrogUo Goldfleld. It is not known who will have his line completed first. C. J. Bradley, commercial agent of the Southern Railway, is In Los An geles. He is expected back about the middle of next week. E. Buckingham, general superintend ent of the Oregon Short Line, arrived In this city yesterday in his private car on business connected with the com pany. He'will hold a conference with General Manager E. E. Calvin. W. H. Murray, chief clerk of the Union Pacific passenger department, ar rived yesterday on a pleasure trip to the coast. He is accompanied by his wife and will make a visit to the differ ent, points of Interest. His first visit will be to. Del Monte. • S. F. The body adopted a recommendation of the police committee that police cap tains and patrolmen g directly under their control be transferred to districts other than the ones now occupied by them. The members believe thischangre will bring- about a change In the'con dition of th* city., \u25a0-.•-:.. Resolutions were adopted by the body favoring:' a chain sang: for vagrants and criminals.
