Wrisht & Sons Invest* "SLASHER JACK" IS STILL AT LARGE ore Young Women Victims of Razor Wielder Tell of Their Experiences ATTACKED ON STREET Determined to run to earth the fiend whose mania seems to consist of a de sire to slash the dresses of young women as they jjet on and off the street cars, the- police are still watching closely all the safety stations along Market street, as well as the principal transfer points about the city. Following the publication of the story yesterday morning a number of other cases which have occurred during the past ■ week were reported to the police and in every Instance the descriptions, where descriptions were grlven of the offender, tallied with that which had been furnished by others of his victims. Every case reported so far has come from a particular section along Third street, between Folsom and Market, and a peculiar feature of the strange af fair is that in every instance a particu larly well gowned woman has been se lected as the victim of the slasher. The latest "slashing" known to have been committed occurred last Friday, when Miss Josle Dixon. a pretty, young lady employed at the- western Electric Company's works on Folsom street, no ticed that her automobile coat had been slashed twice down the back. Miss Dixon cannot tell when or where the cutting took place, but she remembered distinctly of having been annoyed by a slovenly appearing man while riding on a Folpom-street car. Miss Josie Cohen, another young wo man, also employed at the Western Klectric Works, was likewise made to suffer damage to her dress while on a Folsom-street car, and her description of a man who attracted her attention while on the car by his peculiar actions fits the description given by Miss Dixon. Miss Elsie Elfing. a third employe of the electric company, reported that a single cut had been made in the back of her skirt, but she was unable to give any clew to the miscreant who did the cutting. Alice Hulac, a young lady visiting in this city from Eureka, also found two gashes cut in her skirt. Miss Hulac did not report the case until yester day, although it occurred two weeks ago. MINER HICKS IS IN THIS CITY "I'm getting $600 a week and ex penses now, but I'd rather be earning 53 a day with pick and shovel — that is. I'd feel better satisfied; but I guess I'll get used to It." Thus spoke Lind eay Hicks, the hero of the Edison tun nel. Bakersfield, last night. Hicks is in this city, preparatory to assuming the tortures of a theatrical engage ment, in which all he has to do is to sit still and let people look at him while he is talked about. But the giddy life behind the footlights does not appeal to the man ■who aroused the interest of the world by staying -alive in a cramped position In a caved-ln tunnel for fifteen days, fourteen hours and thirty minutes. Hicks, who is a man of reticence and shyness, crept* into town yesterday and took lodgings at the White Palace Hotel, on Market street. With him is W. E. Rutherford in the capacity of press agent, courtier and- friend. Part of Hicks' contract is to keep silent and out of sight. This intense chaperonage does not find favor with the miner, but he sticks doggedly to his contract and talks but little. He is inclined to the belief that he has little to say. Hicks has a magnificent mustache, as long as that of an Italian colonel of dra goons, and his complexion is of the tint of Southern Europe, but he was. like the lady in the song, "bred In old Kentucky," and when he was In the little box in the tunnel he used to sing "My old Kentucky home, so far away." Sometimes he would sing to drown the sound of the phonograph on top, for Hicks is human after all. The inces sant phonograph music nearly drove him crazy, he says. When at the bottom of the tunnel cave-in Hicks says he had but one thought, "When will I get out?" and he says he 'was determined he would get out, and never despaired. Now, on the vaudeville circuit, he has one single other thought. That is. When will he get off? He wants to settle down, but still he would like "right emart to ramble." be r-iys. Hicks' moJesty is delightful. He blushed when he spoke of the letters written him by women anxious to be come Mrs. Hicks. "The only letters I want to answer," he said, "are those written me by children — they wrote some awfully good ones." LAW VIOLATED IN LOVE EXCHANGE Raffale Sposata Arrested for Running Away With a .Minor Eastern Girl GIVES, AWAY HIS WIFE OAKLAND, Jan. 10. — Raffale Sposata loved Josephine Cairo better than, he loved Signora Sposata, and Slgnora Sposata loved Manuel Genise better than she loved Raffale, her lawful husband. This quadrilateral of affection took to the diagonal paths back In Mount Vernon, N. V., where it was all ar ranged happily to the satisfaction of the signora, of Manuel and of Jos ephine and Raffale, according to Mrs. Parsons 1 ideas of the dissolving mar riage bond. But Raffale and Josephine are now reflecting on the fact that the trial form of marriage is not yet accepted by the law. They are reflecting in this manner In the City Prison, whither they were taken upon their arrival here from the East, following informa tion received from Josephine's parents. When the four thoughtless children of eunny Italy took counsel together to rearrange themselves they forgot to take thought of the parents of Josephine, who is but 15 years of age. Hence the incarceration of the experimental pair and the arrange ments for their, extradition and return to Mount Vernoti — Josephine to her parents and Raffale to face a trial for child stealing. During the brief interval between their arrival and their arrest they were entertained by Pletro Genise, who is the brother of Raffale's former wife's new husband and presumably stand ing In some relationship to Josephine, which is too complicated for old-fash ioned English. ELECTION RESULTS ARE CHANGED LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10. — In a deci sion in a county election contest here today. Judge Z. B. West of Orange County.- sitting in th« Superior Court, declared Invalid more than 5000 votes cast in Los Angeles County lor the Independence League State candidates and the non-partisan county candidates at the recent State election^ An appeal will be taken to the Supreme Court. The decision of the court is based upon the fact that the voters had placed a cross in the circle at the top of the Independence League column and also in the circle at the top of the county noD.-partlsan ticket. The latter ticket should, have been voted, accord ing to the~ court's decision, by placing a cross after the name of each candi date. The decision makes doubtful the title to office of several officers chosen at the last election. \ The contest was brought by Milton K. Young and Lewis R. Groff, Demo cratic candidates for the office of Su perior Judge, against F. W. Houser and George Hutton, successful Republican candidates, and by James P. Booth, non-partisan candidate for. Coroner, against Dr. R. S. Lanterman, Republi can Coroner-elect. The contestants lost their case, but hope to overturn Judge West's decision. COUNCILMEN FLEE ANGRY CITIZENS CHICAGO, Jan. 10. — An excited crowd of Ttf'est Side citizens took forci ble possession of the Council chamber in the City Hall today and compelled the members of a Council committee to flee from the place. The unruly citi zens were protestants against a project for widening Halsted street. The committee having the matter under consideration met today and finally voted to postpone action until June. This was highly unsatisfactory to many of the citizens present, who wished the matter settled at once. Cries of "Coward!" "Thief!" and "Rob ber!" were hurled at the members of the committee as they left the apart ment. Citizens came rushing down the gal lery and poured into the hall, taking complete possession of the chamber. They then organized a meeting of their own and formally protested against further delay in settling the question. SMITH TO SUCCEED SENATOR ALGER LANSING, Mich., Jan. 10.—Congress man William Alden Smith of Grand Rapids was tonight nominated to suc ceed United States Senator Russell A. Alger. As there are only a half-dozen Democrats in the State Legislature, to night's nomination by the Republican caucus is equivalent to an election. FIRST REGIME.VT IS KO- MORIS Colonel J. L. Howell and Major Em mett Jones, detailed to muster out Companies. A and Hof the First In fantry, appeared at regimental head quarters last night and formally in formed Colonel Walter N. Kelly, com manding the regiment, and the other officers assembled that the order.mus tering out the two companies was self acting and that 1 the companies were out of the service of the State. " • ■ JILTING LEADS TO AWFUL TRAGEDY Professor Ends Lives of Fiancee and Self When She Breaks Engagement BOTH WERE TEACHERS RIGBY, Idaho, Jan. 10. — Miss Irene Miller, a teacher in the public schools of Lewlsville, was shot and killed late last night by Professor I. F. Couch, principal of the school, who - immedi ately afterward committed' suicide by sending a bullet into his own brain. The cause v of the tragedy was a broken engagement in marriage. v Miss Miller was a member of one of the old Mormon families of Utah, her father being M. M. Miller of Salt Lake City. Professor Couch was a Mis sourian. who recently came to .Idaho. The association of the two teachers In the local schools resulted in an en gagement, but Miss Miller's parents objected, and when she returned from Salt Lake City after the Christmas hol idays she had decided to break the en gagement. Professor Couch called: at the home of Mrs. Winchester, Miss Miller's sister, where the latter lived, last night, and Miss Miller made known to him her de cision. The tragedy followed. After she had been shot Miss Miller ran into a bedroom, where Winchester and his wife had been sleeping, and fell dying across their bed. A few minutes later Professor ' Couch's body was : found in the dooryard. MARRIAGE LICENSES The following marriage licenses were Issued yesterday: Arthur S. Bacon.
