Xew York Stock Blarket NEW YORK, Jan. 11. — Speculative eejitiment upon the stock market today received « rude thoclc in the announcement made late yesterday that the Pennsylvania Railroad had In contem plation the offer of $200,000,000 additional capi tal. The volume of the new securities thus indi cated is in itself sufficiently imposing to have a marked effect upon the supply of capital. For several reckons the effect of the news was ag prsvfitcd. For one reason. It was s total sur prtfe. None of the recent large issues of capi tal have come uohr-ralded by conjecture or «ic curate forecasts. There has been no recent djs otiKMon of si! important additional issue of Penn f-vlrania capital. On tb* contrary, it has been regarded as in the position of having already supplied most of Us requirements. This was the impression created t>y the official explanation of the company's finances clv»>n out nt the time of tb«" sale of f50.0>«0.000 Pennt.rlvan!a boDds In Parts last year. The sales at large holdings in BsHiinore and Ohio. Norfolk end Western and Chesapeake and OLio ttock out of the treasury In tb«> meantime have caused a belief that even the additional n«^ds then Indicated had been par tlsllv supplied. The revelation that- In eteafl the company felt in need of power to raise $20n.<j00.000 was accepted as an acknowledgment tliat the actual necessities had been widely underestimated. The in ference was suggested tlist similar miscalcula tions might " be supposed in the case of other railroads, as the pressure of traffic on available facilities bas been by no means confined to tb* ! Pennsylvania Railroad. Meantime news continued to come to band of the issue of long-term notes by railroad companies on a basin of t» per cent or upward to supply immediately the needs and • arold the necensfty of an attempt to sell per manent securities in the present unpromising condition of the security market. The most vulnerable points in the day's market were stocks which night be assumed to be most affected hy possible need of additional Issues. Canadian Pacific and New York Central, next t« Pennsyl vania Itself, were most conspicuous. The North western railroads, which already have undergone the effect of new capital demands, were com paratively little affected. The prospect of a strong bank statement tomorrow was of little effect in checking the weakness in the stock market, although the money market was appre •\u25a0lably easier as a result. The flow of cash from tbe Interior to thl* center during' the week seems to bsve been heavy, estimate* by the banks themselves pointing to receipts on balance of about $9,000,000. In addition the enbtrea* ury operations have yielded to the banks since the last bank statement a «urn of $2,600 000. The beavy debit <>f the KUbtreasurr at the clearing house today was over $2,000,000. and was largely due to disbursements for transporta tion of malls and does not figure in the estimate for this w>ek. The severest pressure was felt during the first hour, when Pennsylvania touched IS.M 4. an extreme decline of 4 points. St. Paul was etrong on the rally, and the tone wa« strong throughout the list at the closing. Bondfi were Irregular. Total sale* (par value), $2.215.000.
