Jeffery Five favorites went down to defeat at Emeryville race track yesterday and the dyed-in-rlK'-wool regulars, who had turned out in spite of the treacherous track conditions and the poor card, suffered a depletion of their bank rolls fo the consequent enrichment of the .bookies. Walior Miller did not ride and Jockey Brown carried off the saddle honors of the day with two firsts, two seconds and ft third. The track- was iauddy and very deep and holding-. Tho Borgian was the solitary successful fa vorite. -Several "good thingrs" went wrong during 1 th*i afternoon, but one «>r two w*-nt through. H.- T. Griffin's Albia was playedfrom 4 down to 13 to 5 to win the opener, a ■ three and a half furlong dash for two year-olds, and mat'.e good in an impres sive manner. Brown had the mount, pot the filly away flyinir, opened a gap of five lengths on Billy Watkins, the 5 to 5 favorit<\ at the head of the Ftreich and won easing up by three lengths. The favorite beat Raleigh, the only other short priced youngster in the racs thre* 1 lengths for the place. The long shots were all beaten off. The winner showed a high turn of early ppeed and her race, was a decided im provement over her previous perform ances. BROWN I..AADS SANTA RAY X Jorkey Brown followed up his victory in the opening event by winning the second race with the 7 to 1 shot Santa Ray. Comilfo opened favorite, but went back in the betting under the influence of a strong play which sent Princess Wii'-eler to the. post a 3 to 2 choice, played down trom 3 to 1. Comilfo was off ia front and set the pace to the paddock, where he weakened and quit to noihing. Princess Wheeler had been rnnaltfg si cond all the way arid looked like the winner a short distance from 'the wire, but Sania Ray came from be hind with a wdl limed rush and beat the good thing a half length. Yo San caprured third place from the tiring Oomilfo, who probably dislikes weight. Priric< ss Wheeler might have won but for being cut off and carried wide by Comilfo. Harry Macks S.iin-Malaise filly Blanche C turned up winner of the third, over the Futurity course^ Sandy iiad the mount and the filly came in for .-ufScient support to force her price down from S to €. Duke of Orleans and Marion Rose, the latter an oven money favorite, raced one another into exhaustion in the early running, and both tinnl badly in the Ftretch. Sandy brouKlat Blanche C from behind on the outside and was lucky to win from the .fast coming Mitre, inadequately ridden by the apprentice boy I^auby. With a strong rider up Mitre probably would have ■won. as the boy appeared to be of little assistance to the Ornament gelding. Duke of Orleans managed to save the show, but the favorite fin ished in the ruck. The Duke's defeat •was a severe blow «o some of the wise brigade, who were instrumental in hammering down his price. i.o\E pivoniTE mxs The. Borgia n. William Walker's son of Brutus, gladdened the_ hearts of the favorite playe"rs'"by romping in front aJ! the way In'ttti fourth, at a mile and fifty yards. Opening: equal favorite at ■5 to 2 with Anvil, the wisely disrrim inatingplay of th<- talent Bent Walker's horse to the post at 3 to V, while Anvil drifted back. From a\- perfect start Hunter took The Borgian. to the front In the first turn, followed by Funnyside. Anvil met with interfer ence and fell back, but came strong in the stretch. He momentarily menaced The Borgian. but the latter had plenty in reserve and drew away again, to win by two lengths. Anvil was as easily second, and Funnyside just- did save third place from St. George Jr. Byrondale, neglectrd in the betting to such an extent that his price re ceded from 4 to 30, «-ame to life and gave thp talent an awful shock by vanning the fifth with the utmost ease. Horn«r brought him from far back in the run through the stretch and he was galloping over the leaders at the paddock. Trapsetter and Hulford, the latter bring first choice in the betting, raced out in front to the stretch, where both quit, the favorite having broken down. Trapsetter saved third place Pani"! C, closing stoutly, was an easy second at remunerative odds. Alice Carey, prominent in the early part of the race, foil- behind "steadily toward tne end. Fury seemed unable to raise a galiop. I. AST RACK . EASY FOR BLAGG Little Eddie Dugan brought Blagg home an «=asy winner in the closing race of the day. The colt led through out and was drawing away from his field at the ■ end. Jocund came from behind with a rush in the stretch and just did take second money from Aaron J. who had bWn in close pursuit of the winner to the paddock. Aaron J stum bled a short distance from the wire, but for which he probabiy would have saved the place. Instructor and Toco law. the choices, were always outrun. Batidor was up with tue Jeaders for a while, but <.lass counted and he soon fell back. „ v' Blagg went to the post at 9 to 2, to which figure he had drifted from' 13 to 5 for lack of support. He has not yet run up to his work. ... : • Selecting a winner from the second field looks to be a hazardous undertak ing: The Reprobate has speed, but is a rank quitter. LllHtus had speed his last out over a distance of ground. Vin centio 'probably'! will; be; ln the money. Red Era showed speed his only out. Brush Up. on his third to Supreme Court and Dollie Dollars, looks best in the- third. Hainault ran well his last out and Is likely to be the contender. Bok Elder has been showing "speed in his recent ; starts and^may get some. of the money. - «;'■ Although Shady Lad's last race was bad, he should win the fourth, as he i 3 the! class of the race and is reported;to be working satisfactorily. Lord Nelson is the^ horse he will have to beat. The latter has been running very consistent ly. Chief Wittman is speedy and is likely- to be a sharp contender. j Lucian has been showing good. form and should be able to take the measure of the Held he will go up against In the fifth.-' I'm Joe is running 'in im-* proved form and might be the surprise of the S race at good odds. Graphite's last effort was bad. Baker has an out side chance. iLazell does not appear to be of much account. The Only Way has speed,, but -looks to be -up against it, here. , The •• company looks I a little too good for Metlakatla at this dis tance. Al Lindley; appears to be only a bit the best in the sixth. Johnny Lyons could win^ with- a good ride.
