Shipping News and Gossip of the Water Front Two British Tramps Bring 11,666 Tons of Coal From Australia \ Two big British tramps laden with coal arrived yesterday from Newcastle, Australia. The Como, Captain Felkins, brought 5566 tons, and the Aymeric, Captain Thottbn. SSOO tons. Both were thirty-three days on the way and. both docked yesterday an.l will begin dis rharg-ingr'this morni\?. Both vessels encountered heavy weathor and each suffered some dam- age, the Como being the less fortunate. For twenty days the Como was buffeted by southeasterly gales, and from Janu ary 23 to January 25 she was the play thing of a hurricane. The seas filled her decks to the rail and inflicted con siderable damage to the steamer, which was hove to for three days. The? Aymeric encountered southeast erly gales for the first seven days of her voyage and suffered extensive dam- a *e from the seas which swept her decks. Ilarriman's \m Tueboat The steel tug which the Southern Pacific Is having built by Moran & Co. at Seattle is to be called the Ajax, and will be delivered to the company on / contract time. The tug is a fire boat, and will be one of the best equipped on the coast. It is 110 feet long. 23 feet beam, and draws thirteen feet of water. It has 600 horsepower .engines. The Southern Pacific is building at Its West Oakland shipyards a new ferry boat which is to .be used solely by teams. This is to be a side-wheeler, and will be 272 feet in length. 42 feet beam, and will draw nineteen feet of water, assas There is also to be built at the West Oakland shipyards a new river steamer which is to be fashioned after the Apache. This vessel is to be larger than the craft now running on the river, and will be 220 feet long, with wood hull. Plans are being prepared for a new passenger vessel, which is to be like the Berkeley, and will be a double end screw ferryboat. The length of Its deck is to be 281 feet; beam, 24 feet, and the depth midships 21 % feet. She will be -faster than the Berkeley, and will have a steel hull. Will Take Many Passengers The tide of travel to the Orient has resumed its antefire volume and the Pacific Mail, liner Siberia. Captain Zeeder, which will sail at 1 o'clock this afternoon, . will carry more than ISO .cabin passengers. Among them will, be tourists., business men and Government officials. The Siberia also will .take about 100 Chinese and 50 Japanese' in the Asiatic steerage. She will carry a large cargo. Rons Short of Liquid Fuel The steamer Enterprise, Captain Younggren. which left Hilo February 12 for this port, arrived at Honolulu yesterday short of fuel. The local un derwriters are puzzled to know why Captain Younggren left Hilo with an insufficient supply .of. oil and why, if he could not get oil there, he did not go to Honolulu in' the first place In stead of steaming for days toward this port, as it Is presumed he did, And then discovering the insuf ficiency of his fuel supply, steaming beck to Honolulu, wasting a week's time and taking unnecessary chances of finding himself in an awkward pre •., ament. £S32«SS jChln+tie^ Merrbant' Stonrd Ort John, a Chinese, merchant fn business at 823 ' Webster street, wa3 attacked by hoodlums yesterday at Steuart and Harrison streets. KUburn-that the steamer Jef ferson, owned by the Alaska Steamship Com pany, has been purchased by the owners of the Kilbnrn. She will supplant the Kllburn, which has been sold to the Monterey and Pacific Grove Railroad Company. . Local shipping agents ' of the North Pacific Steamship Company, owners of the steamers Eureka, George W. Elder and Roanoke, and the Pacific Steamship and Engineering Company, owners of the steamer F. A. Kilbnrn. claim that the Humboldt Stevedore Company, • employ ing longshoremen on an open shop basis, has boycotted the vessels mentioned.. The two com panies have always employed union longshore men, and would not consent to 'allow non-nnlon isu to load their vessels. The Humboldt Steve dore Company now refuses to give work to any of those union men who engage in work on the four vessels. Tbe British steamer Condor is ready to leave for Comox, B. The libelants declare they have paid the expense incurred by the vessel since her arrival at Port Townsond on October 5, amount ing to $3970, and that, although repeatedly de manded, no part of it has been repaid. "They pay that nic money was paid out by them at the request of Master Charles J. B. Bergman, and they ask that the vessel be condemned and sold to satisfy claims. It seems that there lias been a mlsnnderstandlng regarding the bill, and Captain Bergman said tbat be was willing to pay whatever amount be really owed. When tbe steamship Tydens sailed today for the Orient Waterhouse &. Co., agents for- the Boston Towboat Company, were much relieved. Their responsibility for detaining forty-four Chi nese on board the Tydeus is now at an end.
