8 Mines of the State Show Rich Strikes of Quartz Work on Many Large Projects Causes a Revival of Interest in Mining While there have been no recent large sales of mining properties in California, a revival of mining in terest is being manifested, unmistak ably, by the large number of projects for mining development in various California mining districts. The old Excelsior gravel mine, just south of Placerville, has been practi cally rehabilitated by the El Porado Water and Deep Gravel Company, as the result of two years of work under the direction of A. Baring Gould. The developments lnclude-6000 feet of drifts and crosscuts. The main tunnel, where the moct work is in progress. Is in 8000 feet. Two bodies of pay gravel have been discovered, so says the Placerville Democrat. A 10-stamp mill has been installed.- Work has been resumed on the Rain bow mine in Sierra County. This was formerly, a large producer. The chute \u25a0was run on an upraise to facilitate the handling of ore. which carried sul phurets and fr«e gold. The Giant King mine, so «ays the Grass Valley Union, is likely to become a large producer of low grade ore. The mlr.e ie near Washington. Nevada County.' Two tunnels are run. one of which, now In 570 feet, hae cut a large ledge, and the other will be extended to th« ledge. The mine Is in posses sion of the Co-operative Exploration and Development Company. A 20-stamp mill \u25a0will be constructed. SLATE MIXING IS ACTIVE Plate mining In El Dorado County has been largely Increased since the Pan Francisco fire. The shipments of slates for roofing and tiling amounted last year to hundreds of carloads. The plate deposits at Chile Bar and Just north of Placerville are of great size and are supposed to be the equal in extent of any in the world. Slating ton, a town growing out of the slate production. Is a bu«y and growing camp, with a postoffice and school and other conveniences. The mines of Plumas County will be Rreatly helped by the operation of the' Western Pacific road through Plumas County. "The Greenville mother lode," Fayfi the Plumas Independent, "ranging from Taylorville through Crescent HIIIB northward to the head of Wolf Creek, shows an unbroken continuity of ledgr-s for a distance o"f fifteen miles. The mines along this lode have, in the course of halfi a century,' produced $15,000,000 in fr*e gold." A rich quartz strike at Strawberry Valley, Butte County. Is reported by th<? Oroyille Register. The discovery was made by John Thomas while he was crosseutting a ledge in a tunnel. Trie ledge may be a continuation of, the oJd Costar & Daley ledge that once pro duced well, says the Register. A etory is In circulation in Shasta County that the Guggenheims will take the <solinsky group of sixteen claims near Kennett, which they have under bond. The Sacramento Bee says that the Guggenheim? established an office 1n Kennett . three months ago. Since then they have kept twenty-five miners at 'work, and supplies and materials have been shipped in largely. The Hall and Greagg electric road passes within r short distance of the Gollnsky prop erties. The ' Guprgenheims took their bond after bodies of copper ore were uncovered. WORK OF THE SMELTERS The -construction of several smelters In the Northern California counties itf expected. There are two smelters in the Kennett district. A third smelting plant may be add^d by the Guggen heirap. The Balaklala smelter, now in construction, will be increased in ca pacity to handle 1250 tons a day. Au gust 1 next is the date set for the be ginning of smelting at this plant. Dun can MacVitchie, the managing director of the -Balaklala. says that 2,000,000 tons, of eppper ore will be blocked out by that time. The Balaklala has a contract to treat the ores of the Trinity Copper Company. The Redding Searchlight says that work at the Keswick smelter is active. If the litigation now pending in th« I'nited States' courts is decided favor ably to the smelting interest the Moun tain Copper Company will install a modern plant of large capacity to han dle^the low grade ores of the Hornet mine. c The estimated smelter product of the Old Dominion mine at Globe, Ariz., .for the month of February is 3,000,000 pound?. The January production of the Copper Queen smelter at Douglas was 5. 500,000 pounds of bullion. A new v-epper district is opening up at Hot Springs Junction on the Santa Fe. Pres rott and Phoenix Railroad. The Los Angeles Time*! says that the Buffalo and Arizona and the Pennsylvania and . Co, Arlzona companies have workings to the depth of about 300 feet, showing vjjp large bodies of copper ore. The Grass Valley Mining: Exchange sold 60.000 shares of mining: stocks in January, the first month of ;"its exist ence, so says the Miner Transcript, of Nevada City. The transactions amount ed to $16,000. According to the Grass Valley Union the Kentucky Ridge mine will be opened the coming spring In new own ership. The new Hoag mining district in Modoc County, which was discovered about a year ago, has several mines In development.' These include the Tur ner, Williams & Mason mine, wher* $6000 worth of ore is on the dumps; the Wade, Reed & Plummer mine, which has rock that is reported -to assay $20 to the ton; the Kaffader and Barrett claims, in which some of the rock is said to have assayed $200, and the Seitz copper mine, which is about six miles south of the gold belt. North of the Hoag district, about forty milea from Fort Bldwell, a strike has been made at Windy Hollow. The Hoag district Is* about five miles from Fort Bidwell. A new road to the mines has been constructed by Los Angeles men. CHROMITE IS SHIPPED The Redding Searchlight says that three carloads of chromite have been shipped from a mine in Shasta County, which is at the base of Castle Crags, four miles from the Castle Crags sta tion, on the Southern Pacific road. "A tract of land amounting to 120 acres ] contains a great amount of chromite ore. Chromite is worth $15 a ton. The only drawback to this mining propo sition is that the demand for chromite is limited. It is used principally in compounds like potassium chromate and lead chromate. Another strike in the L.ightner mine in Sierra County is reported. The ex tent of the newly discovered ore body has not been determined. A large and rich ore body, says the Stockton Independent, has been dis covered in the Etna King mine in Cala vera's County. LOCATE MMESTO.Vffi DEPOSIT F. S. Chastein and 'others, says the Yreka Journal, 'Jiave located 100 acres of limestone quarry in Shasta Valley, near Gazelle, and will at once establish kilns. The Los Angeles Chamber of Miners has entered into a movement to have a smelter constructed on tide water near Los Angeles. It is in tended to build a plant with a daily capacity of between 400 and 500 tons. Between $300,000 and $400,000 will be invested and about 200 men will be employed. G. H. Whitelaw of San Francisco and others are working the Beaudry hydraulic mines at Minersville. Trjnity County, under bond. The option was secured last summer. Several thou sand dollars have been expended by Whitelaw in getting ready for\the test run. If success Is- attained th-i property may be taken in by the v men who have it under bond. The tract is large, including 3000 acres. The gravel lies on two benjhes and the pipe is bo laid. that. the water used on the upper bench can be conserved for use on the lower' bench. The development of the* copper dis-* tricts of Northern California is a topic of growing interest. A few facts illus trate this. Five hundred men are.em ployed In th^ Blue Ledge copper dis trict In Siskiyou County. Before the first of July, so it is reported, "more than 1000 t men will be on the payroll of the Mammoth Copper Company at its mine and smelter at Kennett. Seven hundred men are at work for the com pany, exclusive of those building rail road lines. 1 According to the Redding Search light there are 100 tunnels on the Bala klala mine and every one of them is in ore." The main tunnel of the Balaklala mine has passed through }000 feet of ore, which was encountered first, at a distance of eighty feet from the mouth of the tunnel. The Searchlight says': The stupendous copper resources of Shasta I County, their amazing extent and demonstrated I rlchnea*. are almost Incredible. While the in terest of the outside world is centering more and more in this district, not more than an inkling of the enormous scope of Shnsta's cop per-lw-aring zones has yet reached beyond the confines of the county. The Butte district, for illustration, is con fined to territory a mile square. The reader however, will be able to appreciate in its oom psratlve aspects the statement that the B»la fclala croup alone, one of the (rreat copper mines i of this district, covers two miles square, or a territory twice the estent of the entire Butte district. The Balaklala Ik bnt one of many great mines on the Shasta ooppur belt, representing a dis trict where a dozen immense smelters may em ploy thousands of men and build populous 'towns and cities. .
