THE SAN FRA^STCISOO PALE; WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 1907:
RICH GOLD STRIKE MADE
IN MINE AT TONOPAH
Montana Midway Exten
sion Company, Guts Into
the Pay* Streak
VEIN TWO FEET WIDE
Ledge Is Believed to Be the
Same as That Worked
by Paying Concerns^ \
SPECIAL DISPATCH TO ! THE CALL
TONOPAH, April 2.--Authoritatiy c
Information was given out today by
the Montana Midway. Extension Mining
Company of this camp confirming the
report that a strike of the highest im
portance had been made by the com
pany. It Is announced that on Saturday
last the company cut Into the pay
streak on' the, ledge In which It has
been working for ;, some tim< past and
that It now has a two-foot vein In a
thirty-foot ledge that will run over
$160 to the ton, more than $90 of this
being In gold.
;From the discovery In the mine tha
local men figure that the ledge is the
same as that being worked with such
great success, by the Montana-Tonopah
Company. The ore is of the same char*
acter as that taken from all the pay
ing mines of the camp. It :Is 'now
thought that many years have been
added to the life of the camp, as.then
is pood reason to believe that the ledge
will run through several properties
that adjoin the Extension, notably the
Golden Anchor, Cash Boy and Little
Tonopah, and from there cut in, to the
flat below town, where many properties
have been worked for a long j time lin
an effort to catch -the continuation of
the big lode.'
The ledge was first encountered in
the Montana Midway Extension- on the
sixty-three-foot level at a distance of
seventy-five feet from the shaft. .Over
twenty feet of ledge matter was: cut
through before the pay streak, was
found on the foot' wall. On the 475-foot
level it has again been opened 100 feet
from the shaft and tl«e same conditions
are found at the pay streak following
the foot wall. The ledge has; a sharp
dip to the north, tand many of the
properties in the vicinity have already
started new working at depth seeking
to catch the lead. V" v
It was only a comparatively short
time ago that' J. H. Sullivan, one of the
heaviest stockholders in the company,
offered practical control of the mine
at $200. The offer was not aocepted,
for which Sullivan i« now rejoicing.
