First national bank. He held the bank liable for the changes made in - two checks of the.£levator company after they had been signed -by the manager, Samuel Burger. The changes, and . erasures , In the checks were so , cleverly.- made that in one Instance .practically the x whole face of the check was changed and a photograph enlarging the check 'a. hundred times does not show any traces. One check was raised from $3.50 to 55,500 and the other from $400 to $1,400. The changes were made by Bliss, the cashier of the elevator com pany, who stenciled the raised sums on the face of the checks. .. Judge Hunt in his decision said that the fact that Bliss was ~an employe, and in a sense an agent of the, elevator company, does not /-relieve the' bank; of responsibility for the changes made in th>e checks. Judge Hunt based his decision on the question of responsibility.^ He Jsald the elevator company had used all duo caution and! the law was clear on the point that that .was all' that was're quired of a signer of a check.
