CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE
Future Grain and Provisions - '•'
CHICAGO. May 25.— After an easy opening
caused ■by reports of ,wet weather • throughout,
the west the' wheat market today/ closed strong
and higher because of a flood of bullish news and
strong buying for export. At the close July
wheat was up I%®ia6c December was up.l%rg)
l%c higher and September was up 1%.@1%c.'
Corn was . up . %c. • oats were- %(?%c higher and
provisions were 7%c lower to 7%c higher. : -'
• The wheat market throughout the • dar was
nervous and responded readily to ' either; bullish
or bearish Influences. . The volume of trade was
light compared to. the market during the earlier
days of the week. At the opening prices broke
somewhat on the report of rains throughout the
west, . although even this was offset by the pre
diction of • the*, weather bureau that -colder
weather would follow the rains. Prices ■ rallied
sharply, ' however, soon ; after.. the opening de
cline. Advices from' abroad ..were decidedly: of
a bullish -character. It was reported that bad
weather throughout the continent of .Europe: is
affecting "the crop . 6trongly, and Liverpool was
reported as stronp in" response to these 'ad
vices; "It was also declared that mercantile
grain houses had bought several cargoes of the
English market at a material advance. It was 1
also declared that English -and " continental
buyers were bidding stiffly for cargoes ■ of ■ all
sorts of grain. From Manitoba came statements
of an excellent demand for export, and reports
of good market. Under these reports the market
steadily advanced and closed strong. July
wheat was quoted on the open at %@l%c lower
at 99c, sold between 99% c and $1.01 and closed
at $1.00%. September opened %@%c lower at
99%[email protected]%, sold between 99% c and $1.02 and
closed at $1.01%@1.02. December opened %@
%c lower at $1.00%<31.01. sold between $1.0134 :
and $1.03 and closed at $1.02%.. „: -
The com market held strong . and steady "all
day, despite the reports of rain throughout the
corn belt. July corn opened : %@%c higher at
53 to 53% c, and after - selling at 53% c closed
strong at 52% c. : -■■-."--: ■' ': '.. ■-v
The oats market was affected. by the strength
of other grain -and by rain reports from the west.
July opened unchanged to %c lower at 47@47%c.t
sold between 47% and 47% c and closed firm at
47%@47%c. " . ■ -.
The provision market was dull all day. jg Prices
were ■ easier at the opening, because of a : weak
market for live hogs, but July pork closed higher,
principally on the covering of shorts. '. At the
close July pork . was up 7%c, lard was .-down
7%c and ribs were 2%@sc:lower.

. The New York Journal of Commerce says:
"The market - for prunes on the spot is firm
and business is good, though the buying Is against
actual . present . wants. In I view of the scarcity
of , other dried fruits | and . the prospects of short
crops . and high : prices the coming season, the
outlook is held to be most promising for a heavy
consumption of prunes this year. In view of this
and the outlook for a short crop, packers are not
disposed to force sales for forward shipment from

Comstocks Stronir, Southern .\cvada^
Quiet and Local Securities Xeglected
: Yesterday's : business on the stock ' and bond
exchange was virtually ■ nothing, - and contrasted
sharply with the activity and firmness of the
preceding day. -The only sales. were 20 shares
of Associated Oil at an advance from $32.23 to
$34,50. and $1,000 United, Railroads bonds at
an advance from $6U.50 to $70. Quotations for
Contra Costa Water were "much lower at $53
bid, $61 asked. " , /
.The Conlstock mining shares closed the '
week very strong, with continued activity -In \
several of the leaders. •■ ;
The southern Nevadas were ' extremely dull, 1
even for Saturday, and there were no sharp j
fluctuations lv any of them. The general tone. ■
however, was firm, and the changes, though
slight, were generally in the direction of
higher prices. ■• . j
