June 3.— The tone of the stock market was very weak again today and the heavy declines carried some of tbe most con 1 fpicaous stocks lower than they sold last • month. ! Tbe reason for the weakness was not very apparent, beyond the obvious explanation just there was no demand for stocks. No effective demand developed at any time during the session and bear operators showed no urgency ' In tht desire to cover tselr snorts until tbe final ! bour of the trading. Tbe amounts of . stock ; told were not wry larpe. but the entire pros ' tration nf the buying demaad left prices easily vulnerable to moderate selling pressure. The I'acifics and tbe copper industrials were the . weakest features, altaoagh the declining ten- J dency of the market was comprebenalve. Pub 1 lisbed report* of assertions by the head of the ■ Harrtman sysirm of the necessity of retrench ! raont thnmshont tbe railroad world had some ' (-special effect on the stocks of that 6ystem. • Thp weakness of the coppers was sufficiently explained by the decline in the London prices ■nt metals. In New York the metal exchange also marked down the price of metals. A report from Washington that a determination bad been reached not to push the government ■ i>rose<titlon against the Harriman railroad com- Moadcm had no effect In checking the decline !In stocks. R&ilroad traffic officials were quoted rs usual, 1b weekly reviews of conditions In their field, and were disposed to concede some falling off in the volume of freight moving, although <-laimiap an excess still over the corresponding •period of last year. Railroad earnings of tbe year each continued to show an Improvement In ihe net returns for April, the net addition of IV-nnsrlvania to the list, with the first increase hi net for many months, being regarded as espe cially significant on account of the representative character of the system. Some disturbance of sentiment was due to tbe persistent heavy de- : mand for cold from Paris, shipments to that puist arranged bere amounting; to $2,000,000 and at London at $2,800,000. It does not appear that cnv sinister significance Uea behind this movement, which Is most reasonably attributed to the trade activity in France, the large de mands on the Bank of France and low level of its reserve, the present holdings of that - lnstitn lion in spite of tbe accretions of t lie lust few weeks, remaining far below the amount held at tills tide last year. The lack of confirmation of the financial troubles as the day progressed had much to do •with driving the shorts to cover more exten- 1 lively late in the day. Tbe substantial re coveries resultant were maintained to- the last. Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value, $1,824,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. K«r Tork Stock Llat £. F.
