REAL ESTATE AND BUILDING NEWS A comparison of the record of build- Ing operations " for this city and for Los Angeles is interesting and also in structive and will be especially so to the person who believes . that San Francisco Is not going ahead fast enough and that other cities are more progressive. The papers of Los Angeles point with some pride to the fact that "according to 'the report of the chief building inspector, the valuation of new buildings for which permits were taken out in May again crossed the million dollar mark. The total was $1,005,605, which was only slightly be low the record for the corresponding month last year." In this city the building operations for the- month of May compare favorably with the southern city. They were: Frame "buildings. $1,781,979; brick. $2,516,944; alterations, *82,505; total, $4,381,431. or $3,375,726 more in value than in Los .Angeles. Despite the fact that It was compar atively a dull month for the real estate operator, the record for this city that there were 755 sales of real <-state. which represented a total value of J-.'. BETTER FEELI.VG IS.SHO\V.\ The improvement ' in . the streetcar controversy, the settlement of the iron •workers' strike and the adjustment of the sympathetic strike of the electrical workers* union of linemen by the In ternational brotherhood of electrical : "workers have had a 'reassuring effect,! and the belief is expressed that^the J labor situation is improving : 'substan ; tially and that the city wilt; soon: be in a normal condition. Real estite operi • tors report that there has been consid erable Inquiry for' residence property : and they attribute this to the fact that many people who left the city after ' the. fire are deEirous of returning and being' unable to rent houses are pur chasing land on which to build. This * is especially true of those people who passed a winter away from the city ; and who declare that nothing will in duce them to spend another winter out of town so long as their business compels them to come here daily. An evidence that San Francisco is regarded as a grood place not only ' in-whlch to Invest money, but in which j to live, isff shown by the fact that I Adolph Coors, a multimillionaire cf. • Colorado, has bought a fine residence J lot on Presidio .Heights, through the I .-vjrency of Harrigran, Weldenmuller & \ Rosenstirn, on which- he intends to : build a . magnificent house. The lot is • €>n the north line of Washington street j between L«ocust and Spruce, and has a : frontage of 52:6 by a depth of 127. It : is Coors' intention to build in the near '• future. HELPS REBUILD CITY ' Among tlie many nonresidents who came to tbe city directly after the are to help rebuild the city was Henry Kahn, -who, having started all his buildings, is about to return to Paris. Kahn is one of the old time merchants of San Francisco and for the' past few -years has lived abroad. After the disaster be came here and has , rebuilt in Van 1 Ness and Golden Gate, avenues, in. Brannan street between Second and Third, in Eddy street between Mason and Taylor, on the southwest corner of Powell and O'Farrell streets and In i the west line of Van Ness avenue be tween Golden Gate avenue and McAl lister street and also organized a com pany to build on the old Kuss House eitc. . Baldwin & Howell have been mak ing a. specialty "of 'loans during tho past 30 days and report having place!' for various clients several hundred thousand dollors in sums ranging from $5,000 to $50,000' each. Preference has been shown; by lenders for^ Jlrst class collateral rather than city real estate, ! although quite a.number x of loans have been made through the real! estate : firm oo; business properties. The; loans al • most JovaViably: have been for two - years, and the rate of Interest has, been ! at the rate; of 6 "per cent net' to the j lender.
