SPORTS THREE CLOSE FINISHERS IN SHEEPSHEAD RACES Exciting Struggles Thrill Onlookers at the East- s crn Course SrnCIAL DISPATCH TO THE CALL NEVI" YORK. July I.— The finishes in three of the races at Rheepshead bay> today were c!ose enough to please the most exacting of those who look for excitement in a race. In the opening event Gene Russell ard Hollister were only heads apart at the finish, but" Hollister, which had closed fast in the middle of the track, was, so far from his rival as to create the impression to many in the grandstand, who did not make proper allowances for the angle, that he had won. ■ The Judges said that Gene Russell had the ad vantage of a good head and the fact that Martin was riding him with great confidence, never drawing his whip, bears out the decision of the judges. For the Mermaid stakes the only flrture on the- card, Tankea Girl and Killaloe came to th« finish so close together that It was only the nod that gave the decision to Yankee Girl. In the fifth race there was the closest three horse finish of the season. Bridge Whist. Herbie and Glorious Betsy were only Inches apart in the order named. July I.— The public ..got the better of the book makers at The Meadows today, three fa\'orites, two second choices and one backed outsider accounting for the card. The majority of the books were "dutched" on nearly; every race, the volume of play still j [being Inadequate for the large number of : j books operating. Considering the at- ; j tendance, which- was good for .an . off i day. lowering skies^ and a mediocre card, the play showed improvement over' Saturday and i 3 expected' to pick jup steadily as the local public gets a j line on the horses. The track was sur prisingly good, though rain had fallen in the , forenoon. . <= !° "Tobe" Ramsey's Judge, In grand shape now, .won his race Very Im pressively. An attempted coupon Billy Mayham was spolled o by the bolting of that horse when the" barrier went up,, and his backers did not .even- get a rua for tbeir money. . . • " - • LAdy Kitty, one of- the beaten,fa-vor ites, got away badly and received weak handling. A. SMYTH SQUIRES STILL RULES FAVORITE OVER BURNS Pressure of Money on *thei Australian Makes Him j Strong Choice : j^» j R. A. Smyth The fact that Bill Squires, the Aus tralian fighter. Is a pronounced favorit* over Tommy Burns for their meeting at Colina on Thursday In a 4i round fight Is attributed to the loyalty of the sons of Albion. Englishmen are back- Ing him to a man and "from -the money they are offering on him It seems prob able he will enter » the ring a still stronger public choice. The Burns m'^xx have been getting 10 to S for their, money In whatever quantities they have offered it. and there has been a little 10 to 7 where the Squires adherents hava been overanxious, to get their cbln cov ered. " \ ■■ Some of the^betQng sharps think that th# Burns men have not thrown their big money Into the market yet and that when they commence- to unllmber th& odds will shirt. This does-'not, seem likely, as the price fit the present tim» should be sufficiently tempting to'brlnjf out the most conservative of Burns men,. There fc» no doubt that the.,?rlend* of the latter expected him 'to be iha favorite In the betting." and they ar« seeking a reason ,for o the favor; with which Squires Is being received. , Men who have visited Squire s"* 'train ing quarters come- away with widely differing views. He goes somewhat on the latter 1 * youth and the boyish confidence ha has~in.his ability to whip anythingln the form of fighting machinery that comes within the range of his weight. Jim Kennedy, brother of Jeffries' old sparring partner, saw the two boxers on alternate days and he plumpa strongly for Squires. He is one of those followers of the ring who do not think Burns has Improved as much as he should have done since his fight ! with Dave Barry in this city.* * Ken- ' nedy Is impressed with Squires* stylo ! of hitting and with the strength he puts into hl.<« blows. » s - Referee Jeffries catnes up from Los Angeles yesterday and spent the after noon at the camp of Squires, near San Rafael. He went over the rules with the Australian and placed ' especial stress upon breaking out of a clinch- Jeffries said: "When I order you to break, U does not msaa that you are to drop your hands and step back. It means that whichever^ boxer is holding must let go his opponent and back away. H© must be prepared, however, to protect him self at all limes. If a hard blow 13 landed at that tfrne. the man who re ceives itn(edinot think I will give him the light on a faul." Squires said be understood what was' required of a fighter In this cofentry when breaking; out of a clinch and that his idea, tallied with that of Jeffries. He. then brought up tlxe question of the inflated belt used by XJurns. This was brought up by Manager Barney Rey nolds at th«» tin,* articles were, ■ signed in Los .Angeles. It was then decided , that the referee was to be the sole judge as to whether. the beit came within the ordi- '. nary rins: attire which^ the men»are toi wear.
