LADY KITTY RECOVERS
HER SPEED OVER NIGHT
Beaten Favorite One Day,
She Wins at Long Odds
the Next
J. R. Jef f ery
.SEATTLE. July 2.— The Meadow*
track was fairly fast today and the
■pport showed corresponding improve
ment. Form was well observed, fa
vorites taking half the card. The only
race that left a bad taste in the mouth
was that won by Lady Kitty. This
ma re had performed very indifferently
at a -Bhort price yesterday, but showed!
•wonderful improvement over night and
won easily today. May Amelia bitterly
disappointed the public in the race
Lady Kitty won.
Red Reynard Is In rare form, as he
canie right back. and repeated In spite
of bad racing luck.
The Mist ran an Impressive race and
promises to be a clever performer here.
The -Ramsey party and C. T. Henshall
attempted a cleanup on Martinmas, but
The Mist -was too fact for him.
" Logan Denny provided two winners
in Aunt Polly and Tarrlgan. both of
•vrhlch are showing vastly Improved
form.
The betting, today was heavier than
■on preceding days and the prediction of
rteady improvement^seems likely to be
'verified. Some books probably . will
<lrop out tomorrow, however.
• Disgusted with Colonel Jewell's
showing yesterday. Trainer Buxton sold
that hors* to T.. Boyle for $300.
' Harry Mack arrived today with his
horses.

SCHEME TO BOOST ODDS
ON SQUIRES-BURNS BOUT
OEctdie Hanlon and jimmy
-Lawlor Are Scapegoats
v of "the Gang"
A carefully laid plan to boost tn«
betting on the Burns-Squires fight
failed last night and two of the men
who were on hand with Squires money
proved to be the '"fail guys"* for." the
reason that they were not. put,on,their
guard at the proper moment. The men
' were Eddie Hanlon and Jimmy Lawlbr.
neither, of- whom was known to hay*
so much available cash before. On the
opposite end of .the frame up' were
George Memslc, the lightweight fighter
and side partner of Burns, and a 'Los
Angeles friend., „
. x The. little side play happened at the
j Tuxedo when things began to . look up
lively on the. line. Memsic ajid his
friend entered the place, londly pro
! claiming that they had $700 to .bet on
Burns against 51,000. They approached
Ed Butler. J a well known handbook
man. and asked him to cover the money.
"We do not want any pikintr bets."
shouted Memsic. "We are out for th«
big money and if we cannot get it
here we "will look around."
Butler admitted that he did, not nay»
so ; much coin . available, .but promised
to skirmish around for, lt. Memstc and
his friend told him that they would b»
-In Thompson's restaurant a few doors
away and would be ready to maks'th»
bet as soon as possible.
Butler left: the place and in a few
[moments found Jimmy Lawlor and Kd
dle Hanlon. The former had $2,000
which he was very anxious to wager
1 on* Squires, while Hanlon was there
with $1,000 for the same cause. Jubi
lant over thf» fact that he had discov
ered two "live ones," Butler Immedi
ately steered them to the restaurant
where Memsic and his friend were din
ing.
Hanlon and Lawlor, not aware of th«
fact that the Los Angeles men wer«
"stalling for sucker money." flashed
their bank rolls. Memsic and his
friend all but ran out of the place.
After some clever side stepping, they
announced that they were not quits
ready to place their money «n Burns.
In the meantime' Lawlor and Hanlon
are supposed to have "awakened to the
fact that. they were the tools of the
gang. After summing up the situation'
they decided to make a hasty exit from
the place before the story of their ad
venture became public property.
• But all Fillmore street knew of it
within half an hour. Everybody- was
well aware that neither ' Hanlon nor
Lawlor had $3,000 between them .to *et
on a prizefight. After a lot of tall
figuring and wise calculating "the fight
fans awoke to the fact that the two
ex-pugilists were handling "the monay
for the Coff roth ring and that they
fell into a trap at the last minute that
Is. liable to make a difference of several
thousand dollars to the snre thing men
about town who are figuring on mak
ing a clean up on Squires.
