12 SHOE STORE MANAGER IS ACCUSED OF FRAUD M. S. Feder Charged With Having Destroyed the Firm's Records LEDGER PAGES TORN Assets of Corporation Have Been Attached by Creditors Rosenthal & Feaer*s- creditors are vonderlng what the missing pages of "ie defunct shoe firm's ledger con ained, and as a preliminary to a thor • ugh investigation Milton S. Feder, ■^Ad of the company, was arrested yes- on a charge of having mutilated he records of a corporation. The harges were made by. the firm of A. IX Little A Co. of Lynn, Mass., manu facturers of the Soros is shoe, which Teder carried, and John Dusie, . former -..lanager of the more at 1622 Van Ness ".venue. The eastern firm alleges that jhe local concern owes It 135,000. Dusle 'as a note against the company for V 4.000 and dgned the warrant on which i'eder was arrested. Behind- the charge contained in the warrant yesterday axe other accusa ions which, the creditors say. will be .he basis of further felony, charges. The goods of the company were at ' ached a short time ago on claims pre sented by Little & Co%, who began suit ■ 9 recover $35,000 alleged to be due for hoe shipments. This suit was followed • losely by Dusie's to recover $4,000. and ! hen Mrs. Mathilde Feder, mother of 'he manager, levied an attachment to • ecover $3,900. The total value of the- stock, against vhlch $42,000 of claims were presented, •mounted to only $16,500. When the '■ooks were examined Tuesday to find ■vhere the money had gone, it was "ound that many pages had been torn from the ledger. What accounts these ■<ages contained is what the creditors ope to learn, and -if It be discovered Ebjti fraud was practiced in the man agement of the business additional ■ riminal actions will be begun against the guilty persons. In connection with the suits brought by Dusle and Little & Co. the question rose as to the liability of the stock holders of the insolvent shoe company. Attorneys Bourdette & Bacon for the company and Attorney W. H. "lahony for Dusie instituted an inves tigation and found that the record of nock ownership was not clear. Mrs. I'eder was supposed to be the owner ;f all of but four of the shares In the ompany, which was capitalized at "150.000. She claimed, however, that ':er holdings had been passed to her ■on, M. S. Feder, several years ago. The creditors, said Attorney Bacon yes •rrday, believed that the transfer was fiade only a short time ago and since -he firm became financially involved. The name of Rosenthal & Feder is - «ie of the oldest in San Francisco. It ..as founded in the sixties by the two -len whose name is still retained. They operated a factory for many years In ansome street. On rtosenthal's death '•.is share was assumed by Feder, who uccessfully continued the business >:ntil bis death, his -will bequeathing iVie store to his wife. She had the rm Incorporated and took all but four -hares, which were held by the chil . rcn, Milton being made manager. Attorneys Bacon and Mahony said : rsterday that the records were in a -retched condition, in addition to the •lutilation of the ledger, and that those -eeounts which needed light were the jnes which were missing. "The book keeping methods," said iacon. "were crude and inadequate, and ; o make the situation even worse whole •ages have been torn from the ledger r»d there are no account books from .Wich the missing data can be reas : ombled." Feder was arrested in the offices of : Is attorney and obtained his release ■p baiL. The firm of Little & Co. has a representative to this city to ; iok after the company's Interest and rge the prosecution of Its former pa ! :on. Attachments r^ave been levied > gainst Feder's automobile, his house "id all property upon which the credl : irs hope to realize.
