One morning, about a week after the Strawberfy-Picking adventure, Nokomis found a strange animaVs s footprints', in -(the sand near the Smoke-House, -where the fish were being cured.. She knew at once that they were made by Gweng-gwah-uhgay, The Wolverene,^ the bigges^ nieanest^^and ugliest 6f all the Marten People. So destructive is Wolverene that the Paleface hunters call him "Carcajou; the Greedy Glutton." i Because he isj such a thiet and is disliked by all the wild creatures, Big Bear had forbidden him to come into the Refuge Ground on pain of. deaths 1 But when the snell of smoked. fish was wafted across the Stream he yielded to the temptation to follow.up.t he and,.crQ6SiCg~overx he camecneaking along the shore, hoping to get a chance to steal some of the fish. "But Nokomis \va"s ready for him! / ? >J\y.^ >}:£^-i:}:f+:^ The waxmth of the fire and the bubbling song of the pot aoum lulled Little Eear into a dDze/(Ncxt to eating, and playing eomerhis-^ chief, the Little Cub liked to take i "cat naps "),/ All the while Wolverene,; the^Gi^y"Giu&'n;;Ws;lb^i^' l ißtift» I bu^^ As soon as; l»j Baw there was no one left to guard thmgs but the bear cub and cr^ much attention to Little Bear, but fixed his'fierce eyes "upon lAvadak, intending to pounce on him and gobble^h^ up.in'a*jisyl« the' *f ary old crow was too sharp to be caught napping. < He noticed "a "rnu'sky" smell in the air X^hich is a peculiarity of the Marten and V/ea .. sel People) and looked around just in time to see Wolverene crouched for a spring!
