10 LAW AGAINST SULPHUR DISCUSSED BY GROWERS Executive Committee Given Power to Deal With the Question HILGARD ; CRITICISED H. P. Dimond Says the Pro fessor Is Wrong in His Theories The committee of five named some time ago at an Informal meeting of the fruit growers and packers to out line a plan of action in reference to the ruling against the use of sulphur in the drying of fruit met yesterday in the office of Henry Cahen, 209 Cali fornia street. It was resolved to leave the decision of all questions affecting the fruit Interests of the state with the executive committee of the Fruit Growers' Protective association that was formed last week. The most Im portant question before the committee Is the attitude to be taken regarding the handling of the fruit that had been dried before the promulgation of the new ruling. The apricots are ready for the market now and the peaches are being dried. "We have seen 'It. A. Gould, chief chemist of the pure food law, who, the department said, would give us every assistance," said Cahen. "He declares his willingness to go out In the fleld and make, the test, but how he i» to in spect the crops of S.OOO growers, some of whom have as much as 400 tons of fruit, is not clear to us." In discussing: the published statement of Professor Hilgard of the state uni versity that the sprinkling of fruit trees and vines with sulphur was in jurious, the committee is of the opinion that he is in the wrong. "He speaks of spraying of trees with sulphur, which is quite another matter," said H. P. Dimond. "It Is done to kill the mildew, and If too much is spilled on the roots of the trees it may kill them. It cannot possibly affect ripe fruit and has nothing to do with the matter of drying fruit with the fumes of sulphur. It is a pity that a man who is supposed to be an authority should cpeak on a subject of which he is so grossly ignorant." The fruit packers are Indignant at the resolution condemning the use of sulphur passed by the grangers in So noma county and forwarded to Wash ington. They declare that none of the fruits that need curing with sulphur are produced In Sonoma county, which is a grape producing area. MATES DISOBEY ORDERS BEFORE BOATS COLLIDE Neglect to Call Captains When Danger Signals Are Displayed The rule of navigation, which pre scribes that a sailing vessel has the right of way over a Rteamer and that the latter must change Its course in order to avoid a collision with a ship under sail, was conceded on both sides In the investigation yesterday by; United States Local Inspectors Bolles ! and Bulger into the collision between the steamer Sonoma and the* two masted schooner Advent. - ! The collision took place off the Men docino coast shortly after 2 o'clock on the morning of July 6. The Sonoma, which prior to the accident had been traveling at the rate of 13 or H miles an hour, struck the Advent on the port side, tearing away the bow, the two masts and the sails of the schooner and Inflicting damages unofficially esti mated at from $15,000 to $20,000. There was no disagreement in the testimony as to the fact that the night was clear and that the lookouts on the respective vessels saw each other's lights from 15 to 25 minutes before the collision, and that the weather was ' calm. But it appeared that the mate of neither vessel obeyed the - rule re quiring them to call their captains when a ship was sighted within a mile. Third Officer W. C. Kenealy of the So noma swore that he saw the* green light of the schooner* off the port bow, and that after watching it 1 for about five minutes It suddenly disappeared and the red. light took its place. He then reversed the port engine and slowed the starboard one. He was swinging to port on the starboard helm when the vessels came together. He sent the watchman below for the cap- \u25a0 tain, but the collision occurred before I the latter, N. E. Cousins, had time to reach the deck. .?*! asked the third mate why he haj3n't called me sooner," testified Cap tain Cousins, "and he said that he was waiting to locate the light. I reminded him of my orders to call me Immediate ly when he saw a light." Captain O. T. Olsen of the Advent testified that his second mate called him Just before the collision, although the mate had been watching the steam er's'Jlghts for 25 minutes. He, however, would have kept on his course, as the mate did. „ The case was submitted. THUG HELD FOR TRIAL William Holland, a waiter, was held for trial before the .superior court by Police Judge Shortall yesterday on a felony charge.
