LIBERAL ODDS QUOTED AGAINST ST. FRANCIS Sprinter Seattle Han dicap Event to String of Victories J. R. Jeffery SEATTLE. July 23.— St. Francis scored his fourth straight victory since the opening of the meeting, when he took the measure of the shiftiest sprinters in training at The Meadows in the handicap feature of today's card. In spite of the stable support the horse's odds drifted back in the betting to H to 1 under the pressure of a tre- \u25a0'; mendous plunge on Entre Nous, the favorite, and .' other contenders. St. Francis and Entre Nous were always in forward contention and raced in front Wke.a team head and head through the stretch. Fireball, coming with a whirl wind rush in .the ilnal sixteenth, mado it a ease of three heads on the post. It xca.9 the rriost exciting: finish of the meeting and aroused the blg^crowd of *pectatory to a high pitch- The greatest surprise of the day was the victory of J. B. Smith at 30 to 1 In n distance raw. The horse had been, stopping at sprinting distances in previous rac^s . and his chances were considered Only by a certain few. In spite of the success of three favorites the book makers cleaned up handsomely- on the day's operations. Marianna's defeat in the opening race Tras costly to the public. The filly Flopped to a walk In the stretch and finished out of the. money after show ing much early speed. Gross' presence in the saddle/worked a wonderful improvement ' in Canardo, which the books made a short priced favorite for the second, despite his previous poor performance. The change of riders also worked well in Ruda b^k's case, but that gelding ijust did ir.anage to beat Dr. Roweil, which at long- odds showed startling Improve ment over his last out, when he ran as a favorite. Judge Egbert received notice from Judge Stebblns of Denver today that Jockey A. Williams was eligible to ride only the horses of his employer,' H. G. Bedwell. This ruling of the Denver authorities wil be respected here. Phil Hainrnell, who booked for the Keene Brothers at Denver, arrived to day. He went to Butte with the Keene horses at the conclusion of the -Denver meeting-, but found prospects sb un promising there that it was decided to ship to Seattle without delay. The dozen horses in the Keene string are expected here tomorrow. Elijah Brewster Is training them during the disability of Hamilton Keene, who was Injured in an automobile* accident in Denver. Hammell will book here. Ben Hazeltine, who is interested in tho -I. H. Miller striog, also arrived to day from Butte. Z Seattle Selections J. R.
