Xew York Stock Market SEW YORK. July 23. — There developed in the stock market today s mild 'opposition to tbe declining tendency whloh seemed satisfied to errest that tendency without making any" at tempt to push prices upward. The result was a dull market which approached stagnation at times. The only active trading was in half a dozea stocks, and the prices of these vibrated within a Barrow range. The day's news con rem«d the <lividend to be declared by Southern* Paclflc next month. Tbe large earnings for the last year disclosed by the official estimates riven out last week gave the basis for the rumors that the rate would be raised from the t>re«ent five per cent. No authoritative Information was forthcom ing from any nouree. The manner in which Union Pacific has hung back since the new movement in Southern Paclflc started aroused suspicion, as Union Pacific would be the lar pest beneficiary of any increase in the Southern Pacific dividend. Tbe strength " ehown by Atchison . was at tributed to the expectation that tbe annual report to be published Tuesday wiU show earnings very largely in excess of the pres ent disbursement dividends. There was a con tinuation also cf the sharp weakness of the United States Steel, which was a material feature, in disturbing the market. ln the open- Ing decline today. Buyers of these stocks professed confidence that the strike of iron miners in the Lake Superior region would be bound to benefit the corporation.
