Otherwise the price did not run -above ?B.SO. In the report, of a meeting of the fruit growers and packers in connec tion with the new departmental ruling agralnst sulphur under the national food law,. appearing in last Saturday's Call, the commlttee_and -H. P. Dimond were unintentionally • misquoted as criticls ingr Professor Hllgurdof the University of California. The Call, in conformity with its usual policy of fairness to all, willingly corrects the statement made in the article referred to, the • facts beingr as follows :_ One member of the committee called attention to an article that had ap peared In the press, , which quoted Pro fessor Hllgard as saying: "There was an inclination to use. too. much sulphur on vines and fruit trees, and sulphur so used in excess* had, in some In stances, resulted In*^ the .killing "of the tree or vine." To this Dimond re plied . that the article referred » to an entirely different matter than. that cov ered by the present departmental rul ing." which is the subjecting: of fruit to the. fumes, of burning sulphur, prior to or following drying. He said that he presumed. * that ' the general l public, being Ignorant upon the subject, would not be likely to distinguish between sulphuring vines and . fumigating dried fruit. No criticism of Professor Hilgard waß matte or . intended. In 'fact. The Call is informed that at the' executive session oo r the board immediately fol lowing,' it was decided to "consult with the professor on the subject, JWHHEHfi The most serious r feature of the de partmental ruling r is that it comes upon the state in; the midst of. the fruit season, when there is no time to change or modify present methods, or to change or - alter labels and cartons on hand in time to meet the demands for the handling of ' the 1907 crop. The governor, senators and ; congressmen and T.he trustees of the Growers' and Packers' association have been and are making every effort to obtain a sus pension of this decision for a "sufficient length of .time \to permit the handling of this ' year's : product, being that the situation can be.. met; to ,the satisfaction > of, the , department i and without distress to the industry If time Is given In which \u25a0to \ meet it. If, in, the midst of handling : the great' product, this order is allowed to stand in force, the entire state will suffer irreparable injury.; The present state .of, affairs is de plorable, for growers ..throughout the state :fear to" sulphur, and , the packers and shippers hesitate to accept" deliv ery, fearing inability to ship to eastern buyers. An effort will be. made on the part of the trustees, seconded by; the cham ber of " commerce, \u25a0 to*.-: obtain an inter view with Straus. today- to present the situation' to^ him.
