NEK" YORK. July 24.— Tbe action of South
ern ■ Pacific today, which rose to SO 1 !. was
rcf arded as strongly confirmatory of the. con
riction that an increase in the dividend rate
is imminent. No official Information on the
plans of the directors could be secured beyond
the statement that tte directors would l>e
la session tomorrow, . the executive committee
sot- until later. Ttds Information was considered
to Indicate that a period of speculative activity
.In Southern Pacific would almost certainly
intervene ; before dividend action shall be an
nounced. ■
The professional traders followed the move
ment on ■ this supposition very Industriously.
Some ©f tbe romors used with effect ' regard-
Ing the probable dividend action were not
contest with asserting the Intention to raise
tbe rate to 6 per cent, but insisted on a com-
Jnr 7 per cent ; rate. The official estimates
of the year's earnings published last week
showed «. balance of $23,73 ». 150 after the allow
ance'for tbe-dividend on the present outstand
ing preferred stock. This Is equivalent to about
12 per cent oo the common stock~of tbe com
pany. Tbe $36j000,000 of new preferred stock
now in ' process of payment does not ; yet draw
i r t»rest. i the requirement for which would be
X 2,500,000 each year. It will be seen that either
tbe 6 or 7 per cent dividend will leave a large
margin of surplus In the present . rate of . earn
ings. Tbe weight of opinion In the trading ele
ment today . was In favor of the- 6 per . cent
rat«. Union Pacific sympathized with the juaior
fecurity today. This served to rectify to some
e*tett tbe bad effect of Union Pacific's recent
poor response to the movement ia Southern Pa
cific, which threw suspicion upon the latter
movement. > In view of Union Pacific's liTge
holdings of Southern Pacific and its consequent
profits from an increase in tbe latter' s divi
dend. Union Pacific, was expected to moTe in
• harmony with Southern Pacific ■ The movement
was not without some Influence on the general
list, but nothing like the proportion that would
be expected usually of such c considerable mar
ket demonstration In a prominent ' stock. .. This
was partly due to the fact . that - there was
some switching of traders* ■ accounts from other
stocks, into the H&rrimans. Accounts in otber
stocks were sold out to secure resources to put
into Southern Pacific.. This process was repeated
in United States SteeL TUe decision.- in tbe
Iron stock has been followed by a diminution
of the talk of tbe increase in the stevl dividend
tt the meeting of the directors next week. -
Tbe Hill stocks were backward, owing to tbe
difficulties - which have been pointed out in tbe
way of a cutting : of the Burlington melon for
those stockholders.--"
Money oo "call continued to decline and at
tie same lime forefpr. exchange made, a further
encroachment cpon the narrow margin which di
vides it from the gold export point and kept
that prospect in' view."
