2 Terrible Scenes of Columbia Wreck Are Told by Witnesses of Midnight Crash at Sea Many Survivors Reach Portland on G. W. Elder Maybelle Watson Is Praised by All • for Heroism Three Women Drowned in the San 'Pedro Cabin SPECIAL DISPATCH TO THE CALL. PORTLAND, July 24.— Miss Maybelle Wat6on of Berkeley, the heroine of the Columbia wreck, who arrived here to day on the Eteajnshlp George W. Elder. tellß a harroving: Btory of her rescue from the Sin Pe<sro and on every side praises zre \u25a0sung: for her heroism. Her deed in saving- a woman from drown ing after men had refused to assist in the rescue will go. down as one of the bravest tales' of the sea ever told. That three women picked up from the Columbia were drowned in the cabin of the San Pedro Is a feature of Miss Watson's story not previously re lated. She says thaf these women, whose names ehe does not know, were placed In the. lower cabin of the San Pedro as soon as they were taken from the water. They were helpless, and while they were' lying unwatched the water rose in the cabin, drowning them. This happened while the crew and pas sengers were busy saving others from the Columbia. According to Miss Watson, all of the Columbia's passengers had retired, with the possible exception of one or two men, who were in the saloon at the time of the collision. Several of the boats which were lowered soon after it was notjec-d that the passenger craft was taking water turned turtle and were sucked down beneath the waves when the big iron ship plunged out of sight. Miss Watson, who ."was on her way to Portland to visit her brother, said to night that she was thrown in the water, but had first placed a life pre server around herself and had done the same for several other women passen gers. Although she had never swam before, the young girl, who Is of a most determined disposition," struck out with both' hands as though she had acquired the art of swimming expertly and was making good progress away from the sinking ship when she was interrupted by another . struggling woman, who caught her about the neck. After struggling for two hours and a half the almost exhausted girl and her then unconscious companion were picked up by a boat in charge of Third Officer Hawes of the Columbia. Columbia Survivors Arrive at Portland Thousands Gather to Greet Rescued Passengers PORTLAND, July 24.— Bearing sur vivors of the wrecked Columbia, -the steamer George W. Elder arrived here this evening. Hours before the vessel docked thousands of people gathered to welcome the fortunate survivors of the disaster and relatives assembled to prove by sight the safety of their loved ones. Others who were there were impelled by a final hope that by some miracle a father, a wife, a son or a brother might have been over looked in the preparation of the roster of the saved. When the big boat made fast a great chc-er rose and by what seemed mutual consent the crowds divided.*' forming a line on either side of a narrow lane through which the survivors walked as they left the vessel. They were seized as fast as they -were recognized and smothered with hugs and kisses and not a few tears found refuge on the shoulders and breasts, as loved ones were reunited. DESCRIBES THE DISASTER \ividly descriptive is the story of the. Columbia wreck, told by W L. Smith of this city. His narrative is tn« bet=t connected and lucid of any told, by 'survivors brought by the etc&mer Elder. Smith, who is a strong man. according to women on the Elder, was the most energetic person on the enip. aside from the officers. Smith is one of the few people who actually saw. the collision. , He paid: I o«<l-b*«» i» tfc* room of th* first >nrin«r until .fter aJdaipbt.
