In deed "there: were two surprises. Th« first, found in the success of manipula tion by which Goldfield Consolidated Mines shares wero made .to . sell at 17.50. The second was ; when the same chares, after the toboggan* slide that they had,, rallied and: climbed up In a flurry* to ?8 .under' the." stimulating effect of buying orders that | were re ceived Just about* when the downward : movement found its culmination and the shorts were filled with glee. ' Painfully but surely, im the face of the strongest opposition that the brokers in quest of low'prleei could put up, Goldfleld Consolidated Mines, at the rate of about 2% to 5 points *t a time, climbed and climbed until the selling price was 50 points above' the lowest of the day. When this result had been attained the Influence 'of the '< buying " orders stopped. The close, of the informal selling brought the highest price, Tfie curb sale that followed left the situa tion unchanged, practically. Combination Fraction, which was stationary In the forenoon, -with the exception of a variation of a few points on sales amounting to only 2,000 shares In total, . shared in the risa ' of j Gold fleld Consolidated Mines in the latter part of the day. While brokers, shouted themselves hoarse and wrestled fiercely for place Combination Fraction 1 went up to 12.22&, which was just 22W points belter than the opening price a-°d 17&. points higher than the best price obtained in sales in the regular call board. _ '\u25a0:. Florence had even a stiffer advance. The opening was at f 5,40, and some thing like 1,000 shares went off at that figure. Then came the Informal sales, and the climax of the proceedings left Florence at. 15.77 H.: a gain br 37% points in a few hours. Red Hills was a large seller to the, amount of more than 35,000 shares, but| the price was not affected. The ; movement was up ward slightly, with sales from 67 cents to Gl cents, with a relapse to 57 cents late in the day. In the. air, was an echo of what George .Wingfield said in this city some days ago to the effect that he might make a move if ha was "handed one" in Goldfield Consolidated Mines shares. But there was. no evidence that Wlngfleld had entered into the arena in Bush street and in other places where southern Nevada mines qliares are sold . daily. . The . r . buying \u0084 orders were reported by brokers to have come from the east princlpally-with' c sup plementary, bulk »of buying from the Nevada mining cantps. The salfs of Goldfifld Consolidated Mines in the two mining board? in Bush street ran. up to 12,000 shares "in round figures. The' Combination Frac tion sales were about 11,000 . shares.
