YORK. Aug. 29. — The marked -feature of the stock market 'con tinued today to be the relative smallness of thejofferings for sale compared with the late period of liquidation. At, the same 'time there was a subsidence of the demand of an aggressive sort which was in evidence; yesterday./; The reduction of the short as a result of that buying arid, the: consequent diminu tion of the potential demand for stocks were tv be inferred from this. The consequence was a shrinkage in the volume' of the dealings to a smaller aggre gate thanlhas been «ecn for several weeks pa?t. Th<? decision of the gov ernors of the exchange to close on Saturday, in.^conipliancc with the petition of members, was an additional factor „ in proniptjng the curtailment of any new ventures pending the passing of the triple holiday. Trading was almost idle at times and the current of the price movement was "feeble and hesitating. Some calling of loans was reported in preparation for settlements at the end of the month. Tn spite of the \u25a0differing of the caiT loan rates the market was weaker. The naming of full dividend rates on the classes of Eric preferred stocks, was belter than was expected,. although the payment is to be made in 10 year warrants. ' . ... ;., Quotations were promptly established .for these warrants in the curb market, indicating the ability of stock holders; to secure, cash distribution, although &t a considerable discount from t,he face value, but the resort to the device of 10 year warrants of the dividends on Erie stocks made a fresh impression of the scarcity of capital. .. The raising of the question of. the "stability of dividend rktes showed New York Central again particularly sensitive owing to the poor showing of earnings of that company for the first six months of 1907./ The Bank of England reported an improvement in condition, but the returns of the Bank of France were weak. Wheat was stronger again, and there was a revival of uneasiness over unseasonal temperature in the southwest. Bonds were steady; total sales, par value, $890,000. United States 3s declined H per cent on call. -Vevr York Stork UK X F.
