California Fifth in Rank Among Copper Producing Localities Vast Deposits of Red Metal Extend Over I;-: Mountain Ranges for Great Distances * : " ".:. -falifornia takes flfth^)lace as a pro-; : r2uv-er of copper in the United States. ' rado. Idaho, arid. Nevada combined. Its tdvaaecciect,.a-» _ a ' copper producer is seemingly limited only.- -by the amount of . capital' that can »'be Induced to in- , vest ln # lts copper mines and prospects. A map has been issued by the state . mining bur«au that shows that Califor nia has copper in - a -majority of its counties in commercial- Quantities. The red metal has been mtned in earnest in. few, counties. Copper belts hsA-e been tracedVla the north and in other \u25a0 parts of the .state. .As- Arizona has ': not only caught up with but actually surpassed Micbigatf in th« race for ' second place es a copper "producer, so California, outstripping other coast territory, with the exception of Arizona, in present production, will undoubtedly within a few years, with due devel opment. Judging from the product from : relatively small operations, be near ori at the head of copper producing states. WESTEHV PRODUCTION" •'•". The production of copper in the United States in 1906 was 506.591,547 pounds -f.ne, of which the five states in ."the lead are to be credited with 554,- pounds. In addi tion to the dev4lopnients v and actual mining operations in ifhasta asd Trin ity counties, the discoveries In Inyo county have added largely to the pos- J sfbilities of the production of red metai j !n this state/which now has an annual mineral output of Bomethlr.g lil:e 545r 000.000 annually, with a. greater di versity of mineral products than any other state in the union and with ca pacity for vastly Increasing its pres ent sivowiifg. The figures of copper production -for the year 1905' only emphasize the geri vraily hopeful View that has been taken of California by tbe state mining bu reau. In estimating the accuracy of the preceding remarks about the pos-, Fibilities for California as a miner of the red metal that is indispensible for the electrical Industry, attention Is called to some statements' that are con • tamed in a copper resources bulletin • -that has been issued-, by State Min eralogist A'-ibury. This was written in "1902 and must be revised to bring It up 'to the scope of territory that later dis coveries have established, but It still ; !has Indications of great value in con \u25a0 nection with . thp announcement that •California.
