Sept. 27. — The bear party. in the speculation. had good.suc today in forcing price? of stocks to a lower level and, incidentally, in I J erring some liquidation. Stocks were without 'aggressive support, and the demand was torpid pending the clearing up of various factors of uncertainty in the situation. This condition left the market open to attack^ and there was little resistance in the way of buying orders, as they offered prices downward 1 vith growing boldnes?. The call money market was affected appreciably by the preparations for the October 1 settlements, loans at the stock exchange ' today carrying over until Monday, the last day of the month. The determina | tion to refrain from speculative extension until these requirements are cleared i away keeps operations for the long side of the market at a low stage. Foreign money markets as well as this reflected this influence. The preliminary esti mates of the week's currency movement gave this consideration additional j force with its promise of a large decline in cash holdings of the. banks, the .estimates running from $3,500,000 to $5,000,000. The rise in the money fate j was moderate, the high rate being 6 per cent. Foreign exchange rates showed I the continuing effect of enlarged supplies of. exchangeagainst grain and cot ; ton exports and the placing of American finance bills, in London^- The renewed decline in. the price of copper after a period of rest for j several days was of more effect on speculative sentiment. The Unite"d States • steel stocks again came into close sympathy with the copper on account of : the possible analogy which may be found between conditions that must be passed through in two trades before revivals shall come. 'The two classes of United States steel stocks and Amalgamated copper'reached the lowest prices of the year. . The railroad list was inclined to resist the influence of the weakness in the copper for a time, but gave way later, when the Harrimans were affected ; bj' reports current in San Francisco that the federal jury 'had found indict ! rnents against the Southern Pacific company for violations of the interstate commerce act. Gloomy predictions were made among the speculative element .of the effects to be looked for in the stock market from the series of public addresses to be made by President Roosevelt next-week. . : • ' Predictions of colder weather again tonight in the west revived the fears of damage to the corn crop from frost before it is safely harvested. The day's declines run from 1 to 3 points for the -principal active-stocks. Bonds were irregular. The decline in New York city. A l / 2 bonds affected the sales. Total sales, par value, $2,434,000. United States 4s declined J4 per cent on call. , .... »w York Stock Umt K."F.
