EASTERN MARKETS NEW YORK STOCK MARKET -*-.\u25a0 . . . . XEW YORK, Oct. II. — A feeling of despondency weighed on specu lative spirits 111 the financial district today-and overbore all other considera f tions. Its cause had to be sought in an accumulation of previous influences, las there was no new development or event to account for it It had the effect of paralyzing all demands for stock and this prostration of the buying power irave swift effect to selling pressure, which was besides of an urgent char acter in some cases. On a volume of dealings which represents no great inflation of activity there was seen, in consequence, a series of declines registered such as are usually characteristic of panic conditions in the market Stocks which suffered in this way were those in the active class, some of ihem not dealt in often at intervals of many days or even weeks. ' The special weakness of American smelting was associated with the general downward tendency of metals. Today there were further declines in copper. pr:cc> in London, where also a violent slump occurred in the price of pig tin. Fcr two days there has been a decline in price of silver which is sensa ; tional in extent for that metal. Falling off in, the Indian- requirement is given i-s responsibility for the drop in silver. The coming dividend in Amalgamated copper came in for discussion •svith no very hopeful auguries and intimations were broached of a probable total shutdown of copper products in Montana fields. The United States steel stocks were heavily sold and both broke through the figures which popular estimation among the speculative element had fixed as the probable I level of final support by friends of the property. Money on call averaged ! 3owcr than for any day this week and was probably due partly to the scaling I down of stock market loans which were being effected. Bonds were irregular and dull. Total sales, par value, $2,232,000. United ; States 2s coupon declined H, the registered }& and the 4s J4 per cent on call. \pn Tork Stock L,lat E. F.
