Cortelyou said: * "I have said to a number of gentle men who called on me today that any statement to the public regarding- ex iting conditions here should be made with the utmost frankness, so deposi . tors and others interested in banks might realize that entire reliance could be placed upon It. "Those familiar with the facts have known that the situation was made perious largely because of the circula tion of unfounded rumors and the un reasoning 1 anxiety of many, who thought only for the moment. "If the city will continue Its co operation and if the public, on its part, will reflect upon the real strength of our banking institutions, there will be a prompt return of the confidence which their condition warrants. "As evidence of the treasury's po t'.r.on I have directed deposits In this city to the extent of 125.000,000." Wall street today was swept by a. financial storm destined to pass Into history along with the famous dis turbances of the past. Toward the close of the day there were some signs th*t the fall fury of the cyclone was modifying. Prices. nfter a terrific break, showed some recovery and greater steadiness toward the close. Complete calm was not re established. That was scarcely to be expected, but a more hopeful xeellngr prevailed among- financiers last even ing-. The storm center, while converging still within the Wall street district, and beating fiercely upon the Trust Com pany of ' America, was not confined en tirely to this city. There was a strong influence which extended to the mar kets of Europe and to those of other large cities of this country. Pitts burg was most acutely disturbed, and justly so, for the first great commer cial collapse of the present period was announced there on the failure of the WeEtinghouse electric and manufactur ing company and affiliated concerns, with liabilities estimated at $100,000. 00<T. The Pittsburgh stock exchange Miepended business, awaiting a better determination of the situation. Conferences of bankers and , trust company officials were, held throughout the day. The wisest minds in the finan cial district are dealing with the situ ation under the leadership of J. P. Mor gan and James Stillman. The latter, with their associates — all working>to ppther now. all" enmities forgotten in « consequence of the gravity of the situ ation — worked together for the com mon purpose of relieving the situation.
