RACING Massa Easily Outioots Banposal in, the Afternoon's Feature J. R. Jeffery Trying track conditions prevailed at Emeryville yesterday, and several up sets may have been due to that cause. ■••"•» pronounced favorites and two rsor*ro at liberal odds figured in the Mst of winners.' As the long shots ran virtually unbacked the book makers pot a. couple of good breaks, but at that failed to make anything on the day's operations as a whole. . Trance, *& goo& looking: and sensibly .■behaved filly by 'Ben Brush-Fair Vision carried the colors of H. T. Griffin to victory In the £ year old race. Jockey aiclntyre had the leg up, got the fllly oft well and she showed her field the nay from start. to finish. Mieaela, from vthe Hildreth stable, was the contender to th<? paddock, and then faded away. Patois, on which W: E. Applegate at vmpted to maker- a cleanup, was al ways -close to the pace and easily i laced, while * Cbppit, the real" "hot thing" of the race, came from behind to be third. -Coppit, a product of Xapa Mock farm., had been backed in the letting ,■ from .20 down to 7. Had '"Cricket", Kelly succeeded in getting uer oft to better advantage she might have made good.,..* Seattle, a' Sir Her eulea 'filly from 'the Schreiber stable. •was made favorite after being opened oqual choice wJt,h the winner, but failed to get awaj; in the first, flight and finished just, outside the money. BOLOMAXEARNS BRACKETS Holoman, after numerous failures, finally succeeded in making good in the opening race, in which he ruled a short priced favorite. After racing Hersain into submission In the early part Bolo .^nan stood off the challenge of St. George Jr. in t ; he .stretch and won with < asc- by a margin of five lengths. Net- j ihig, in forward contention through out, hold Dr. Sherman- safe for the show. Dangerous. Girl, a 75 to 1 shot, j tliat hrufrbeen we,ll supported, flattered Ixr backers in the early stages, but fi:ded away when the real racing began. The. second race resulted in a surpris ing upset, Sam .Barber, at 20 to 1, and J-;. Rose, at-'S to 1, finishing one-two ;.nd l><ating off Marvel P, Tawascntha and lirlle Kiirnoy, three short priced contenders. Marvel P and Belle Kin nr-y alternated as favorites, but the tat ter went to the post "the public choice." Hho lost all chsnqe when Jockey Rice got h^r off badly, and took her into the deep going along the rail. Tawasenthaj had the early foot, but gave way to 3^a Rose at the lasjt turn, and the latter looked all over -the .. winner until the closing strides, when Jockey Mclntyre brought Sam Beroer up from last place and won in a tierce drive by a neck. Barbor ffas able to win because Mcln tyrc' saved ground with him on the turn, while the dthers were going wide. Marvel P did get up at the end to show. XI ASS A SCORES! CLEVERLY D. A. Rors' consistent J«assa was held nt even/'monry to win the fourth, a mile dush. TIio Vjddenly improved Banposal, w* 11 backed at 10 to I, raced head and) head with Massa into the stretch, but I tlie' favorite 1 ' wh<:h Vailed on drew -away and «.von cleverly by a length. Fulletta, the sr<"6nd':choie"e, was outrun from the lieginning and could do no better than t;:ii.-ii third. Under Miller's energetic handling. Red Ball showed a flash of_the jcroofl form which he exhibited some weeks ago,. but failed to stay after run ning close up to' the pace for six fur jongs: :■ Luclan was left at the post, Jockey Hayes being unprepared* when Starter .Dwyer sprang the barrier. Huerfano was easily best in the fifth, ■n-hich also, was at a milf. Miller got him off "'flying and 'the result was never in doubt, for the farther they went the farther Huerfarw left his field behind. It was just the sort of a track on which Ilucrfar.o is at his- best, and he won in a gallop. Captain Hale barely lasted to beat Treasure Seeker a head for the plac?. Treasure Seeker had been played for a '"killing,'* being backed to 7 from 10. Cholk'Hedriek ran prominently in the early part and loomed dangerously at the stretch -turn, but faded away in ;!.e final 'drive. Miller Must Select New Manager Dr. Rowell Will Ask to Be Re lieved of Task of Making Riders Engagements Dr. H. E. Rowell, upon whom in his capacity as trainer for T. H. WiJHams the, making ot Jockey Walter Miller's riding: engagements devolves, has found the task such a tnankless one that he will ask to be relieved from further responsibility in that direction. When Miller was riding- winner after winner soon after his arrival from the east it was accepted as a matter of course. Since .he has been showing bad form in the saddle there has been some disposition to criticise the char acter of the mounts he has been get ting. This having come to Dr. Rowell's at tention he has, without any feeling or resentment, made up his mind to step aside, and let somebody else hustle for mounts for the champion rider. Valet Keenan, who has been, with Miller since last spring, probably will take up the task if President Williams gives his approval. Dr. Rowell feels that he has all that he can do in training the Wil liams artd" his own* ..orses^r Had* anybody .predicted even recently that it would be necessary to hustle for mounts for Miller he would have been ridiculed. Yet such a condition exists today. Red Ball?. was the only mount Miller had yesterday aside from the two he rode for T. H. Williams, his contract employer, and, he has had few outside mounts of late. 'Heretofore It has been the rule that several owners would be after ■ the boy's ■ services for every race. ■ Dr. Rowell has been "one of Miller's stanchest adherents, even in the face of the poor form he has been showing "of late. But even Rowell was sorely disappointed over the way* In which Miller handled" Blameless in the first 2 year old race of the year. Rowell de clared that the colt had been well Bchooled and that In private trials he was always able to outbreak and out run the other promising youngsters in the Williams string. The race was run in :37 1-5, and Rowell believes that any capable exercise boy could make the. colt step three furlongs in :36 2-5 under the track conditions that pre "vailed Wednesday. fillj- Seattle was capable of winning the 2 year old race yesterday, and it was largely because hie. backed his opinion with his -money that the filly ; went to the post. a favorite. Jack Keenc shipped Red Leaf and Clamor -to Arcadia .yesterday to be freshened up by his brother Ham for the Burns handicap, in which they will run If they do well in the interim and the Impost Is satisfactory. They will remain at the southern track about a fortnight. A bfg bulletin board for the posting of the Jockeys' mounts is being con structed overhead In the, center of the betting ring at Emeryville. The names of the riders will b* displayed -in such manner as to be readily decipherable from all parts of the ring. This is ex pected to do away with the^ congestion in the vicinity of the combination book, from which the Information has been disseminated In the past. ' Dr. 11. K.
