Macdonough Celebrates His Formal Peturn to the Turf by Winning With Woodlander Miss Officious Takes the Richmond Handicap in an Exciting finish J. R. Jeffery The formal return of W. O'Brien Macdonough, propr'etor of Ormondale stud and stable, to the California turf after an absence of Eeveral years had Its auspicious feature, when at- the Emeryville track yesterday Woodlander carried the green Jacket, white sleeves and orange sash of the Menlo Park ! breeder to a brilliant victory In the 2 year old race. Woodlander is a good looking bay colt by Heywood out of Orelana and was sent to the post so ! thoroughly fit by Trainer H. M. Mason j that he won In spite of the handicap j of carrying Jockey Post. Outrun In the I early stage and allowed to swerve i badly In the stretch, Woodlander j jramely came from far back and got t:p in the last stride to win by a nose from Edward Ormonde, the lukewarm favorite, which had made the pace from the rise of the barrier. Hazlet, one of the choices, ran third, beating out Chitterlings and "Who, a couple of youngsters that ran well for a first out and may be expected to do better next time. The manner In •which Wood lander made good stamps him as a fair youngster, but he Is by no means the best In the Macdonough string that Mason is developing. There was some i stable support for the colt at 10 to 1. 1 Despite the treacherous track con- ! ditions the sport continued formful yes terday, favorites again capturing half the card. The track was not as wet as might have been expected, the strong north wind^ .drying it considerably. HANDICAP WELL CONTESTED ~ Although the Richmond handicap at a mile and 20 yards was participated In by only four contenders it was a slashing contest. Miss Officious, from the Reis stable, was played into favor itism, but A. Muskoday. likewise held at a short price, did not lack support and there was enough play on Fuletta] and Bryan, the outsiders, to keep their ' quotations steady. Muskoday had the 1 eaTly speed and Jockey McClain. pro ceeded to open a great gap with .him. By the time the first turn had been negotiated he had a lead of sfeven lengths, with the other three contenders closely bunched. Cricket Kelly, riding an admirably judged race on, the favor ite, did not make a move until the far turn had been reached, where his mount was lost. Then he urged her forward and the Meddler mare, re sponding splendidly, gradually wore down Muskoday's long lead and beat him to the wire in a driving finish by the better part of a length. Fulletta was third, seven lengths distant. There «as some disposition to criticise Me- C!-2in for having utilized Muskoday's early speed to the extent that he did, b-Jt the probability Is that he would have been beaten by a greater margin had an attempt been made to rate him* Beechwood. neglected in the bet ting except by his stable connections, improved wonderfully under Walter Miller's handling, and, to the general Hsurprfse, won the mile and three-six teenths race with easA It was ex pected that he would have the speed to sft the early pace, but few entertained any Idea that he would last, as in his recent starts he had h&en stopping badly at shorter distances. Miller nursed him along so well the first part, however, that he had plenty left with which to stall off Lazell's closing challenge. The latter did not respond with his usual rush at the end, pos sibly because Keogh kept him up too close in the early running. Lone Wolf, running in greatly improved form, pressed B.~echwood closely In the stages and was barely beaten by Lazell for the place. The other four entries were beaten off. HEATHER SCOTT BY A NOSE A thrilling finish marked the run ning of the first race. Heather Scott, the favorite, beating Crystal Wave, a 10 to 1 chance, in the very last 6trlde ! by the scantest of nores. Crystal Wave had takvsn the lead after Galmoore and Bonheur, the early pacemakers, shot their bolt, and Heather Scott hooked up with the Albert gelding near the paddock, after having made up ground from a rather slow beginning. Jockey Kayes put up a powerful finish with the favorite and his vigorous ride cut no small figure In the victory of the horse, Emma G, always well up, was easily third by a safe margin. Neither Margaret Randolph nor Herives, gen erally looked upon as likely contend ers, was able to get up a gallop. The finish of the fifth was exciting enough to suit the most exacting. Hand Me Down, Warden Yell and Oocytus making It a case of three li^ads on the post. Warden Yell hung Just the least bit at the end after look ing to have the race well in hand at the paddock. The promising appren tice ridLer. Fulton, handled the winner well, coolly bringing him from far back to get up in the last stride. War den Yell was a receding favorite and th*> winner was second choice. Cocytus was a well backed 15 to 1 chance. DOW.\PATRICK A SURPRISE, Grace G looked to be so much of a cinch to win the closing race that she was virtually backed off the boards. The opening of the betting, saw; some 3 to S laid against her .chances', but thjs rush to get aboard was so great that the books speedily rubbed; to 1 to 2, then to 2 to 5. and finally to 1 to 3. Jockey -Heatherton had her. un der restraint the first part and she won in a gallop as far off as her rider pleased. To the consternation of many who had backed Blondy for the place, with the Idea that he was as much of a cinch for second money as the favorite was for first, tha 200 to 1 shot; Downpatrick, carrying the col ors of T. H. Ryan and well backed for the place and show with "wise" mon ey, finished second after outrCrmlng Grace G in the early stages. Blondy was safely third. Elevation, which was well played for the show, stopped to nothing after being well up with the pace in the early stages. Gossip of the Track The report comes from Arcadia r that S. C. Hildreth Is giving the fast mare Veil special preparation and. that she is likely to be Montgomery's running mate in the Burns handicap. R. F. Carman's Rifleman a-ndVArimo, J./0. £z t G. H.
