A: Steerage Passenger Dies on Liner
-Alameda and Is Buried at Sea
_ The Oceanic steamship company's
liner Alameda, Captain Dowdell. arrived
yesterday afternoon from Honolulu.
Strong head /winds . were ". encounteredf
for ;the first three 'days of tha home
ward run and the Alameda was a few
hours later than usual in reaching port,
but on schedule time Just the sam«.
The Alameda brought 46 passengers
and a cargo of island products. Includ
ing 8,339 bunches of bananas and 7,032
sacks of sugar.
Amongthe passengers was Mrs.'E. 11.
Svendsen, wife of the "t-aptaln of the
Norwegian collier, Rygia, which arrived
a few hours ahead of the Alameda from
Australia. Other passengers on the
liner were Captain A. N. Walton and
T. J. Heeney, government Inspectors of
steam vessels, who have been at Hono
lulu on a tour of duty. J. A. Kennedy,
manager of the Interisland steamship
company, was a passenger-
The steamer. Hllonlan left Honolulu
for this port ahead of the Alameda. but
wag overtaken by the Oceanic liner on
February 2. The llllonlan should be in
port today. -
J. Rosen, a steerage passenger, died
during the voyage and was burled at
sea. Rosen was a consumptive and was
on his way to Arizona, where he -was
being sent by- the Order of Eagles, of
which he was a member. Rosen, a
German' by birth, had lived. In Hono
lulu for about 10 years. He was a mu
sician and a member of the royal Ha
waiian band.
The Alameda's. passengers included

The Pacific Mall liner City of Sydney
sailed yesterday, from pier 42 for the
isthmus and \u25a0way portp with passengers
and a full cargo. It is some years
sine© R. P. Schwerin honored a depart
ing Panama liner with his presence,
and he must. have been flattered yes
terday at the consternation caused by
his unexpected appearance on board the
City of Sydney about 10 minutes before
sailing time. He made a rapid tour, of
inspection, marching to the music of a
hot roast and leaving In his wake a
trail of anxiety. He chopped off no
heads, however, and as he left the ship
smiled grimly at the success of hia
"stir 'em up" expedition. The freight
for New York .carried by the Sydney,
valued at $63,000, Included a large
shipment of California, wine.
Will Join the Tenyo Mam
J. . J. Richards has been selected by
the Toyo Kisen Kaisha as chief steward
of the Tenyo Maru, the first of the two
new triple screw turbine liners that will
shortly he placed on the run between
here and the orient. Richards was de
tached yesterday from the Hongkong
Maru on which his place as chief stew
ard will be taken by John Schurr. for
merly of the Occidental and Oriental
liner Persia. Richards will go to
Yokohama on the Hongkong Maru as a
passenger. Richards has been In the
Toyo Kisen Kaisha service for many
y«ars and by his employers is con*
sidered a model caterer. During the
Russo-Japanese war, when the Japan
ese liners were impressed Into the
Mikado's service as auxiliary cruisers
Richards was chief steward on one of
the Oceanic steamship company's Aus
tralian liners and made a good record
there. When the. liners returned- to
paths of peace Richards found hia old
Job waiting for him and leaves it now
only to take a« bigger one. Captain
Philip Hastings Going will command
the Tenyo Maru and C. I.Acey Good
rich will be purser. Going Is now In
the orient, having been succeeded on the-
America Maru by Captain Fllmer.
Attacked by Pirate*
!*\u25a0 M. J. Mahoney, a cement worker, who
arrived here Monday from New York,
spent the evening of his first day in
seeing the sights of the barbary coast.
According to tradition he encountered
pirates and reported at the harbor po*
lice station yesterday that they had
taken from him $75 in currency and gold
and a gold -watch worth $30.
