Rev. Nff Poon Chew, Editor of the Chinese World, told them that .China" was . raising an army of 1.000,000 men to. drive the European nations from the empire. "But she will never be a menace to America." -said the . editor, "because, among . other things we have learned recently, is that the United States is the only, nation on earth with a con science." ' The. Journalist talked on "China's Possibility the Church's Re sponsibility," and he interspersed his address .with epigrams and figures of true Chinese terseness. "China," he continued, "is Just awak ening from . her slumber, and she is getting ready to go to arms. When she does she will send Germany, France, England, Russia and all other robbing and thieving nations home in a. hurry. If Russia ever tries again to grab any Chinese territory we will Oil her full of gory holes— just as Japan did. China Is destined to be the greatest nation on earth. . *•» VYes, I say that China will yet live to see . the .funerals of Several of the western nations that have been trying to devour - her piecemeal. The trouble with China has been that she was too much like : a cube— any way she were thrown or kicked. wbatever'Slde turned up,; was Just like everything that had gone before. She has also learned from bitter experience that, might makes right, and that the mightiest nation is the one that can kill the greatest num ber of men 1 in the shortest time with* the -Trast expense, "But in all this struggle of hers to uplift herself there is one thing she must receive. She must have Chris tianity or . she will become an atheist nation, for her , young men '; no . longer believe in Buddha or Confucius. And when you send us missionaries send us men we "can admire as well as respect. "We want athletes. The Chinese ad mire athletes. Tour people too often have seemed to think that all you had to do at a ; missionary was to take a collection and then send any body to China who offered himself as a missionary. As a result we haven't ad mired them all. Give us your college graduates and the athletes. Then there will be no yellow peril." Audience Cheers and Shouts in Joy Over CarrenoY Art Mme. Carreno played her second con cert of a series of three yesterday aft ernoon in Christian Science hall before an' audience larger than that which greeted her last- Friday night, ;but scarcely more enthusiastic, except as greater numbers « make greater noise. , The pianist played a splendid -pro gram; splendidly. ; Indeed, if ' aaything, she reached greater heights than Fri day night, and the audience acted as Paderewski's audiences are advertised to ' behave. Her hearers would "not let her r go.". At the end of her taxing pro gram the J audience \ cheered 'for the en core/ which was given at length re luctantly." For several minutes -after she had finished playing a waltz of her own composition for encore at the conclusion ' of the program the audi ence stood and. shouted. Then she came ? back and played the Schubert- Liszt "Erl King." It was a mighty in terpretation of the fine composition. r Perhaps the most enjoyable numbers of her many contributions were .the Schubert \u25a0. ''Impromptu"- and -the Schu bert-Liszt "Marche Militalre."The latter ter < particularly was played with . that breadth -of vision and ; power which are attributes of Mme. Calrreno's art.
