Association Joins Rat Crusade
and Will Try to Raise
Fund of $10,000 ir ]
More than SO members of the San
Francisco retail butchers' association
met yesterday afternoon at 44 Eddy
street and took steps toward Joining
the citizens': health committee's rat
crusade. More rigid sanitary measures
will . be enforced .In the various meat
markets. The butchers also decided
to do their best to raise $10,000 for the
plague fund.
The meeting was addressed by A. W.
Scott .Jr. of the - citizens' health com
mittee. George R. Fletcher, the Im
provement clubs' inspector, and United
States Surgeons C H. Woolsey and R.
E.- Creel, who are in charge of two
health stations in the city.
All the speakers urged upon the
butchers the necessity of keeping their
shops clean and doing all In their
power to rid their places of piague in
fectM rats.' , The -speakers went Into
details regarding the symptoms and
progress of the disease and explained
to the meat men the various ways In
which they could aid the citizens'
health committee.

A mass meeting o' the barbers' pro
tective -union, composed cf boss and
Journeymen • bar b t rs, was held yester
day afternoon in the labor temple.
Adolph Nitschke of the Journeymen bar
bers presided. Addresses were deliv
ered by Dr. J. Weyer of the United
States army. Dr. Wilson of the Mission
improvement association, Gustav Bren
ner- and Walter Macarthur of the citi
zens' health committee. . Tha speakers
warned the barb* r a against, the rat
peril :. and requested them to get to
gether S3 quickly as possible and lend
their aid to • the citizens' health com

Another mass meeting of the barbers
and - their • employers will be called for
some evening this week. Circulars
will be sent to every shop In the city
and it is expected that several hundred
will *be present. A committee then
will be - named to co-operato with tha
citizens* health committee , and finan
cial aifl f probably, will be voted to aid
in the , clean • city movement.

Priests Urge Parishioners to Aid
in Destroying Rats
In many of the Catholic churches the
priests .urged . their parishioners yester
day to aid. tha health committee in rid
ding.the city of , rast. The danger* of

women and children, as well as tha
men, to do their share.
