Realty Men Predict Big Rush to Get Quarters in Downtown Section in Which Late Comers Will Fare III Levi Strauss building, one of .the downtown business now approaching comple tion, a part of which already has been rented at a fair rateon the investment URGE MERCHANTS TO HASTEN RETURN Reaityraen Anticipate Rush to Secure Locations in the Business District , I teal es^cte men are so deeply im pr<essed with the importance of the j old business section that they say the j merchant who delays comlnj? down j iwn is making a serious mistake, ar- j jruing' that owners now are in the mood I to make liberal concessions, and that ! it is well take take them when in I that mood. They assert that in a short I tim«? all likely locations will be leased, i and that those who have procrastinated will not be able to pick and to choose, but will have to accept what is of fered. • / The argument is advanced that later there will be a big rush to the old district, and that the reason why some of the smaller store keepers are hold ing back is because their leases have some time yet to run, but when those lapse there will be a. general exodus. During the week there has been con siderable Inquiry from professional men, and several uptown houses which were used for office purposes have been emptied of their tenants. It is also said that businessmen who have had their establishments across the bay are returning, and that ofSce buildings are beginning to b« filled. The return of professional .men down town- is looked on with a great deal of satisfaction by all classes of peo ple. It is assumed that from now on, £* more houses become vacant, rents will be reduced, and thus bring back many from the towns across the bay. It is asserted that though there are many houses idle, owners bo far have shown no inclination to reduce r«nts. and that this can only be expected when thera are a. great many more houses show ing th« "to let" sign. Real estate men say that the hotels, lodging houses and rooming houses in the burned district are all leased, and that so far from- there being any dis inclination shown -to live down town the contrary Is the case. The large downtown hotels are filled and the leseees of other buildings express no ' fears as to their ability to fill their houses. -Ivl' TO WIDEN* WASHINGTON* STREET It Is reported that Washington street has been selected as the one to widen instead *>f Commercial street.
