THE CALL'S SPORT PAGE Ketchel Is Backed Into Favoritism Montana Mans Rugged Style Is Expected to Prove Most R. A. Smyth Stanley Ketchel and Mike (Twin) 1 Sullivan will meet In a 25 round bout !n the Mission street arena this aft prrioon and the winner will be in line to fight the winner of the Hugo Kelly- Billy Papke match for the middle weight championship. Ketchel and his friends have taken It as a matter of course that he will win, while Sulli van has gone about his training In a businesslike way and has made no plans for the future. The brother in6tinct is strong In the Sullivan twins, and Jack says that if Ketchel defeats Mike that he will make a suitable weight for the Montana man. who can thus have a whirl with an other member of the family. The bet- 1 tors have made Ketchel a strong 1 to 2 favorite, there being but little Sul livan money in eight, although this is another of those good short ends. The betting Is more lively on the Question of the number of rounds the fight will last, there being many who are will ing to bet that Ketchel will win inside "0 rounds and almost as many to bet he will not. Sull!van has had a long preparation for the fight. He appeared a little .laded in the middle of the week from the hard work he has been doing, but this should not be in evidence today, as he has taken matters easily during the past two days. Mike has done a lot of boxing, taking on a variety of men and thus having to solve all styles. He docs not present the rugged ap pearance that Ketchel does, and this is the chief thing that counts against him in the estimation of the fight fans. He did no work yesterday beyond a leisurely walk, during the progress of which he took several sprints to sharpen up his wind. He did no gym nasium •work. He came to town in the evening In order to be on hand for the official weighing In at Corbetfs at 10:15 a. m. From Intimations dropped by Sullivan's friends he will make a defensive fight until he solves the puz zling style of his opponent. Sullivan hss been using his right considerably in -his training, as he figures a good right is the most effective blow that can be. used on Ketchel. Ketchel worked both on the road and in the gymnasium yesterday In order to keep his weight at the proper point. He went four miles on the road in the mornlrtjpand did, some light gym nsFium work in the afternoon. He came to town in the evening to wit ness "The Virginian." He will enter the ring with the utmost confidence that he ■will be returned the -winner, «nd he does not expect it will take him the full 25 rounds to bring about this result. The Montana man is one of those awkwardly clever fighters whose style is puzzling to an opponent. He uses both hands with equal facility, and one never knows where a blow may come from. He Invariably starts at an op ponent with gentle left jabs for the body. When bis man commences to rrotect that part of his body Ketchel SIEETIXCS— Lodges CALIFORNIA Ip&zc No. 'l. Slattery The Oakland fans are shouting for more baseball this season. They' be lieve that at least three games a week should be played on their grounds, and unless thl3 request be granted the mag nates will find themselves confronted by a flock of hungry cranks, who are very likely to keep their roars up dur ing the season. For several days President Ed Walter has been besieged by an army of the steady boys, who Insist that they be given more baseball during the com ing season. Walter explained that ha was not the schedule committee, but the fans simply told him to wade in and use ,his influence. They al3o Inti mated that unless he did some good he would no longer be on their calling lists. Accordingly Walter has had talks with the San Francisco management about more- ball for Oakland. Tho proposition is a difficult one. for th« reason that the magnates do not know how they will be able to figure on an other day across the bay. The schedule committee has also been called into the case, so it Is likely that some sort of a compromise will be agreed upon i soon. ■ President Cal Ewlns is still short an umpire, but he believes that he will have Jack O'ConneU"s running mato signed up within a.couple of days. -It to look like a race between Bull Perrine and Jack McCarthy. Both are veterans at the game and great favorites with the fans, so it Is simply a question of terms between them and the head of the league. Perrlne's contract was not satisfac tory to him and he so informed Ewing several days ago. Ewlng gave Bull to understand that he could not go any stronger, and Perrine. it is believed, will not yield an Inch. He has ofter3 to work elsewhere and he may decide to take one of them Immediately, j McCarthy sent his terms to Ewlng also, but since has heard nothing from the league's chief executive. Jack has a standing offer to go back 'to work in the Eastern league, but he would much prefer, staying here, as this is his home. McCarthy umpired in the league three years ago with great success. Dan Long •would like to. get hold of Joe Curtis, the Inflelder who has been doing such good work around Vallejo. Curtis played with the Springfield, 111., club last season and was a winner with the fans. He Is still reserved by the eastern -club. Long wrote him several days ago. asking him to try to arrange terms for a release, but the letter was not answered. Long yesterday wired transportation to Lloyd Skillman, his new left handed pitcher, who is wintering in Seattle. Skillman wrote Long saying that he wanted to come to San Francisco and get acclimated a month before the sea son opens. He will leave for this city immediately and. work out dally at the ball park. ■ '- • ATTORNEYS — Continued — A — DlToree;"costa $12: adTic« free; no puh- llcty; no charge without success; collection* and attachment!*: damage eases, wills, estates. . deeds, guardianship, adoption; open erenlngs.
