Club Members to Put Plague
on Serious Basis
First Weekly Meeting Results
in Definite Lines of Work
Being Drawn
The assembly room of th« Califor
nia club was comfortably filled yes
terday morning- when representatives
from all the women's clubs in the city
met to discuss the plague situation in
Ban Francisco. This was the first of
the regular weekly meetings and cer
tain definite lines of work, especially
women's ,work In this matter, were
laid down by those in . charge of the
campaign.
The first speaker was Dr. W. C
Rucker, who reiterated the instruc
tions he had already given the club.
G. "W. Owen stated that there were
5* improvement clubs in the city, but
that their boundaries were bo imper
fectly defined that it was impossible
to systematize the worfc that must be
done or to hold any one club respon
sible for any part of it. This point
was made by several other -speakers
yesterday and steps will be taken Im
mediately to fill the need.
F. J> Churchill invited every one to be
present to a mass meeting tomorrow
night'in the Sixteenth street theater in
Mission Btreet. William H, Ford asked
the women present to. make one im
portant feature of their work the dls
couragemeilt of the spirit of levity
and Incredulity that is so widespread
In regard to the plag-uel Robert A.
Roos gave tome most interesting
statistics as to the work done by the
Fillmore street improvement associa
tion and expressed the hope that con- i
stant arrests would convince those
who break the laws of sanitation of
their responsibilities.

the Mission promotion association;

CHINESE FINED $300
Others Also Pay Penalties for
Violating Sanitary Laws
Gee Tongr, a Chinese laundryman at
Twenty-fourth and Bartlett streets,
tvas fined $300 yesterday, with the al
ternative, of 150 days In the county
jail, by Police Judge Conlan for keep
ing his laundry and stable in an un
sanitary condition. Gee had been
warned several times by health officers,
but paid no attention to the warning's.
Spredona Dolce was fined $10 by
Judge Weller for keeping an unsani
tary stable at 2952 Twenty-flfth street.
In Judge Shortall's court Fred Mlnnoll.
a scavenger, was fined $10 for carrying
garbage to his wagon in a cloth instead
of a can. Lawrence W. Blucher was
fined $10 for not haying wire screens
In his meat market at Fillmore- and
Greenwich streets, and Chris Ziongos,
333 Third street, paid $5 for failure to
keep a metal receptacle for garbage.
Warrants were sworn out before
Judge Shortall for the arrest of "John
Doe" Christman on a charge of permit
ting manure to remain in his stable
at 728 Clementina; "John Doe" Metz
ger for not having wire screens in
his butcher shop at 1316 Fillmore
street, and H. Brese, 2984 Sixteenth
street, for not maintaining- a proper
receptacle for garbage. Warrants were
sworn out bef<»re Judge Conlan for the
arrest of William Bellini, 127 Arkansas
ptrcet, for not preparing a proper gar
bage receptacle, and Joseph Leach for
keeping swine within the city limits.
ACCUSED OF BURGLARY
Frank Hynes, aged IS, who is out on
probation, was arrested yesterday by
Detectives Ryan and O'Dea. Ho con
fessed that he and Walter Joyce had
broken into the fur store of Max Mark.
Eighteenth and Mission streets, and
stolen $250 worth of furs, which they
sold to women in Commercial street,
lie also confessed that they broke into
the tailor chop of Thomas O'Dowd, 154
Church street, and stole $700 worth of
cloth. Joyce was arrested last week,
and when confronted with Hynes he
also broke down and confessed..
