There was no 14 per cent money . rate today to account for the weakness of the stock market, and other'nominal-ex planations u-ere advanced. ' Stany of these bore an appearance of mere surmise, the busiest of which cen tered about Rock Island, its recent stock market history and the personal element connected with it. - The personal phase of the discussion was a supplement to the gossip brought out by the eccentric bulge of 31 points in the stock, followed by a total relapse, all within the mace of IS minutes on the day after the Christmas holiday interval. Rnmors warn plentiful regarding the scope and power of. the influences being; used to make effective the desired disap proval of the Rock. Island market manage merit. The principal selling of the ■ day was attributed to the retirement of specu lative commitments j which had been prompted by this disciplinary movement. Kore substantial grour.vls for the weak ness of stocks were fonnd in other factors. For one thing-, the unexpected stringency of the money market after the first of the year and ' the absence of investment de mand for stocks growing out of the annual disbursements of profits have proved a dis- - appointment. , < .'■':> ; One of the difficulties encountered in holding over through the autumn^waa the fall in the banking surplus to near, the vanishing point in November. .'■■ ; ,,-.. The wholesale shifting of loans then re sorted to in order to avert a deficit in volved the assumption of obligations which are believed to be coming due now. The money market facilities for meeting these obligations are . less than expected, and liquidation in face of a languid speculative . demand is necessary. I The relief afforded to the loan account of the banks in November was secured partly, it is believed, by large advances from aur plus treasury funds of the great corpora tions. These had to be recalled in connec tion with the enormous annual settlements. The coarse of events at Washington di vided attention with the happenings within the financial district and were given their share of responsibility for the action of the market. . * ' Last prices were about the lowest of the day and the rone was acutely weak when operation* were concluded for the day. . Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value, $4,960,000. United States 4s coupon declined % per cent on call. Do cv 4s. ser B 72%! NEW YORK. Jan. s.— Htitton's wire says: "The cotton market was active, lower and; irrest ular. with at times very heavy sellin;. Tbe market showed a fierce drive at the openlns. partly on the break in Liverpool, and prices were carried down about 40 points from the bus of lart week. Following. this there was a recovery of I<> to 15 points on heavy buying credited to the Texas bull leader. Later the market was ir regnlar and un*«ttl?d. The market was full of reports- regarding- tbe recent actions of some of the bull leaders. It was currently reported that nearly all tbe bulls, excepting tbe Texas leader, had i«old cotton on the recent advance and were leaving the market to a certain extent to the support of the Texas operator. It is certain that there was a biz amount of cotton sold dur ing the day. Several big lines were put on the market and round lots were caught on stop or ders, while there were definite reports that^there were stop orders In the market on a scale down wblcb would be cangbt with any further break. The severe break in the afternoon resulted, from pressure by the big operators. "The balls were selling all morning. .When it was fonnd they were unloading every one dumped tbfir holdings. "It is reported that the Philadelphia spot in terests and their following are now ia control' of the bulk of the local stock. These interests are believed to be selling May, but buyinjr March on weak spots, which keeps them In control of tUe supply here until late spring. .
