[Special Dispatch lo The Call)
SANTA CLARA, Jan. 9. — The Santa
Clara college baseball nine defeated
the Umpires of San Jose and Santa
Clara on the local diamond this after
noon by the score of 9 to 2. Coach
Kelly of Santa Clara took the. oppor

tryout and watched their tactics
closely. * .
Kelly was immensely, pleased with
the showing of his cubs at hitting and
base running-.
Two sets of batteries were used by
Santa Clara — Allegaer and Irillary for
five innings,, and Agnew and Porter
field for the remainder. The collegians
had little difficulty in winning today's
game, although their opponents played
the best brand of ball they knew.
Hartmann, the Umpire Otwirler,
showed class on the- mound, except
when wildness in the \Jhird cost five
runs. lie fanned 12 collegians, while
the Jesuit twlrlers were chalked up
with six and six respectively. Allegaer
created a sensation by heaving out a
homer in the fifth frame. jKelly, center
