ISo Hallway 55.r..110 3VO IMPROVEMENT IIS STOCK MARKET NEW YORK, Jan. 12.— The man ner in which the stock market, flattened out today when relieved, from selling: pressure was hardly\ less discouraging: to speculative', sentiment than the active declines of the two earlier days of. the present week. During- the noon hour the sales of stocks 7 were less - than 40,000 shares and it was during that pe riod of practical stagnation that j prices rested at about the top level of the day.. So far as the money market sit uation has been a deterrent to speculative operations the condi tion was substantially improved today. After opening- at 5 per cent the rates receded, thus lowering the maximum rate of yesterday and of the day before and estab lishing: the lowest ruling rate that has been touched in the new year. : The reflux of funds from circula tion Is *o heavy at present as to suggest rather a lull in trade ac tivity. The current redemptions ot banTc notes are on an enormous scale and the daily gain of the New York banks on subtreasury opera tions is due in no small part to the presentation there for the redemp tion of bank notes received from the interior, which thus are con verted into legal reserve money. \u25a0 The advances made by the Union Pacific authorities to the law offi cers of the government for a pos sible compromise of the suits un der the anti-trust law convey an impression of apprehension of the outcome of those suits. The taking up for consultation of the meas ures proposed for preventing deal ings in futures in the commodities markets showed the persistence of the forces at work in directions which are not relished by those most active in speculative move ments. There was some apprehension regarding the outcome of the meeting of the board of governors, to be held after the stock market closed, to act on the report of the committee which investigated the Rock Island episode. There has been no doubt of the part played by this apprehension in important' liquidation that has been going on for many days. When it was seen that buying was practically suspended at the higher level of prices selling was renewed with great aggressive ness and the whole list yielded weakly and closed at about the lowest of the day. Bonds were irregular. Total sales (par value), $3,293,000. U. S. 2s declined 1% per cent on call.
