Their efforts to conjecture what lay beneath the surface of the market resulted in an exceedingly confused and irregular movement." Time and again a fall in price was arrested by the appearance of determined buying and bidding. On the other hand the demand repeatedly died out in course, of the numerous rallies and left the market dull and neglected without apparent power of initiative. The seeming lack of aggressive ness lulled the uncovered bears into a* sense of security, and they showed no signs of anxiety to cover their short contracts until late in the day. The unyielding re sistance developed to the fall in prices by that time began to get on the nerves q¥ the bears', and their covering operations caused an upward reaction that put a more natural complexion on the market. Prices dropped back abruptly U> the lowest of the . day, when the Hill stocks broke in the last hour. Foreign selling of stocks was an important 'influence in the early unsettlement. The fall in British consols today and yesterday has covered nearly a full point. In ordinary circum stances such fears of socialistic government policies as are pro fessed by the I^ondon financial world, coupled with the consider able decline in prices of American securities which has occurred, would he expected to divert Brit ish capital into American invest ments. The unloading of foreign spec ulative holdings proves more in fluential at the moment than any sut-h investment takings. This contributed materially to the morning- dip in prices, which put some of the market leaders to prices lower than the lowest of yesterday. In the northwestern granger group there was some evidence of support until the Hill stocks slumped late in the day. There was a revival of rumors of the possibility of dividend reductions in the group which have been prevalent for several days. Another spell of weakness in Rock Island accompanied the elec tion of Kock Island representa tives to the Lehigh Valley board. It was regarded as a disappoint ment that the new order of things in that direction did not go fur ther. The power of resistance was considerably weakened toward the end of the day, and prices ended at the lowest in sympathy with the break in the Hills. Money continued to work easier and dis count rates abroad declined as well. Bonds were easy. Total sales, par value, $2,845,000. United states bonds were un changed on call.
