XEW ORK, Feb. d.— The Ren era lly heavy tone to today's stock market was due to neglect as much as to any active selling pressure. Tiie demonstrations in vaded a new held today and brought r-prgestions of measures; of resentment against the push ing enterprise of a newer figure in the railroad world. The effect on the general level of prices was not marked, but the influence on the speculative tone was against hopefulness. The most notable example of de- Ilation was in the Interborough Metropolitan stocks. The whole of. the local traction group suffered in sympathy. Third Avenue sold at 1014, the. lowest price in its history. The additional speculative purg ing, the necessity for which was thus disclosed, helps 'to account for the repression of the specu lation. Conjecture continued busy nevertheless,' with attempts to fathom the more general causes lying back of the heavy decline in prices. The fall in prices of iron is cited along with the fact of fomu countermanding of equip ment orders by the railroads. The agitation of anti-corpora tioa policies is said to have spread Its effect of depression from the stock market into general busi ness to some extent. Such show ings as the December net earn ings report of Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, made public to day, give point to the discussion. even though the heavy increase of operating cost there shown is due principally to winter weather con ditions. The reports today of the growth of the European visible supply of copper .and tlie falling off in our December exports of the metal had their bearing on opinion con ivrning the trade outlook. The Pennsylvania dividend was disappointing- to a speculative party that had looked for an in crease. Colorado Fuel suffered from the disaster to its mines. The strength of Japanese bonds was the result of the new domes tic loan to be floated for refund ing purposes. The final rally In prices was the sign of the relief afforded by the day"? liquidation and Jeft a strag- 1 sling show of small net gains. Bonds -were easy. Total sales (par value). $2,393,000. United States'; bonds were unchanged on call. Den & Rio G 4b. 97 I Do Ist & ref 4s. 01 Do rof R* 04 \Vih Kublier »>i«...104 Di«tlller< 5s ..... 72'iU" S Steol 2d 55.. 10."
