Feb. 8. — The stock market showed some relief today from the stress of urgent liquida tion which was so conspicuous yesterday. There was a wave of selling" orders for execution When the market opened, which seemed to be the aftermath of yesterday's precipitate decline in prices. The decline had served to ex haust or diminish additional mar gins and, where the calls sent put over night were not responded to, the selling: out of collateral was the consequence. The news of the market was of the same nature as yesterday, that is. puzzled conjecture as to the source and the motive of the sell ing:. The course of this conjecture tended to eliminate suppositions of inside liquidation such an would be prompted by fears for the in dustrial outlook or decline in profits of enterprises. The lapse into idleness at the recoveries today kept speculative sentiment watchful and somewhat discouraged. The opinion gained ground that the market's weak ness was due to belated liquida tion of large individual accounts dating back to the period of price inflation last year, which had in judiciously overstayed the market, inviting measures of persuasion or insistence from lenders of money employed for carrying the accounts. - Stock market sentiment regard ing the federal itfeorporation bill introduced into congress yester day was improved today. The obscurity surrounding the heavy cash decrease in the bank statement on Saturday compared with the large grains indicated by the known movements of mqney was partly cleared up by the knowledge that large withdrawals had been made from the banks by the trust companies in preparation for the call by the state banking department at Albany for reports of condition. The copper frade reported some concessions in prices for that metal, but the January statistics of the Copper Producers' associa tion are expected to show another material decrease in stocks. The copper industrials were exception ally heavy. The nervousness man ifested itself in the final break in prices which put Union Pacific. United States steel and Amalga mated copper to the lowest price of the session and of the move ment. Bonds were heavy. Total sales tpar value), $4,305,000. United States bonds were un changed on call. Di«ti!lers 5s 72^!'' Many stocks show support on declines and there is some good buying. Interest continues to center in the lake coppers, with North Butte and Butte Coalition next in demand. The best opinion seems to be that accumulation is taking place in the last two issues. Trading light and hard to get the trend, but oppcrs generally look ns though they would improve when the New York market turns. The January production of the Butte mines will be under 2O.<nX>.ooo pounds, and the under standing Is that it will not be permitted to tx ce«-d that figure for some time The following list is furnished by E.
